It is definetly hurting them and making it harder to train new recruits to go to the west. When I was there it was obvious that they were starting to shrink in size

they will always find people to recruit.its a never ending fight.the best way to stop them is to tighten security in your own country.even then they could attack from within.

the real terrorists are those who occupy or invade other countries. The british and american governments try convince ppl their fighting a war and are helping the world. The real truth is ... by their actions and their armies actions ... their pouring fuel into the fire.

911 was a just reason to go to war .. but now it seems the american government many years later , havent a clue what their doing . Osama bin laden still not found and their off invading iraq .

Regarding the provisional ira .. it still angers me that ppl class them as terrorists. Civil rights , own choice of nationality , building blocks to a united ireland were set in place, by them forcing the british to negotiations through an armed struggle. Because nothing else was working at that time .. democracy wasnt getin anywhere for them to listen .

People keep mentioning Enniskillen... If I remember correctly, didn't the IRA punish the commanders of the Fermanagh Brigade in the Enniskillen bombing?????? I remember reading that the attack itself was an insubordination. As for Omagh, that was the RIRA...... petty splinter thugs, now that was definitely a disgrace. Anyway, I think the Provos had their time, in the 70s, when there was definitely a need, the people were downright defenceless. But there's no reason for armed violence in the world today. There's a peaceful way to resolve this conflict now, and I can only hope that these dissident paramilitaries will disarm.

About the USA in Afghanistan.. if you talk to soldiers over there right now, they're mostly guarding the poppy fields, protecting the poppy farmers (which make heroin) from the Taliban. That war has a lot more to do with drugs than the Sun and Fox News lets on.

Great video below.. Has Heraldo Rivera from Fox News with the soldiers there admitting publicly on TV that they're there in Afghanistan growing heroin.. It's like Vietnam all over again.

The Taliban are no freedom fighters, nor are they defending their people or their country. The only thing they are defending is their extremist views.

I support the war in Afghanistan, and if I had any power then I would send troops into Pakistan. Take the war straight to the heart of the nest, the Pakistani army are certainly not doing enough. The Taliban and other factions and organisations need to be eradicated from the face of the planet, it can be done if we had the full support of the people at home and the people in the conflict zones. That is the biggest mountain in this war.

The quicker people realise we are doing them a favour by ridding them of ruthless extremist idiots who dictate their lives and murder their fellow neighbours then the quicker the job can be done. This isn't an invasion, we are not stealing your land and homes, we are taking your land, homes and lives from the enemy and giving it back to you.

You can't call a country 'terrorist'. You can accuse them of 'war crimes' of being a 'rogue state' or similar but by definition, a country that is recognised internationally cannot be 'terrorist'

Being in Afghanistan and Iraq is a tricky situation.

By being in Iraq there is no doubt that the threat to Britain has multiplied. Iraq was a country hated by Al Qaeda and the like because to them, Saddam was a heretic who did not adhere to the proper laws of Islam. In turn, Saddam kept Al Qaeda out of Iraq which, as you might imagine, meant it was hard for them to recruit there.

When the alliance went into Iraq, their 'shock and awe' policy resulted in predictably high civilian casualties - neatly categorised as 'collateral damage' by the US and their allies. This basically resulted in an entire generation of angry young iraqi men possessed of a newly acquired hatred of the west. Not only that - the complete lack of adequate post invasion planning meant that there was no real authority structure in the country. Al Qaeda basically had free reign to do what they wanted in Iraq.

Afghanistan is a little different because Al Qaeda already had a massive amount of influence in the country anyway. Can't be assed posting much more, I need to sleep :p

Basically - having a military presence over there, at least in the capacity that currently have, has measurably increased the threat we face here at home. There are a ton of different aspects to this - it can't be easily explained.

Homeland security is a whole new can of worms as well. It opens a huge civil liberties debate. It's never as simple as tightening security. You have things like tapped phonelines, street cameras, unfair customs treatment, and that's just scraping the surface.

That sounds suspiciously like a rewording of "the end justifies the means". A very dangerous school of thought indeed.

38 votes for the IRA being terrorists seriously?

    * joke

No its basically straight forward... if it is yours to own and someone takes it or trys to take it then you should have the right to take it back/defend it

i voted al qaeda and taliban. Its not as simple as asking that one question the reason that freedom fighter/terrorist saying exists is because there is not a simple answer in my opinion.

And yes going by this statement you can see why people dont regard the UDA/UVF.etc as terrorists but freedom fighters. I dont let any * government tell me who is and isnt a terrorist i make that decision for myself.

Omagh? The recent attacks on the Antrim army base? Manchester? I support an united Ireland, but I do not condone this sort of violence.

I think we all have to realise that as long as human beings walk the earth there will be violence. It is in our genes and is a part of our functionality as such beings that we do not always agree with our social environment and the ideas of others, we are just far too complex and our diversity is unimaginable.

99% of all civilian casualties caused by the US army are by accident, but yes you will sometimes get some deranged evil person who decideds to go off the reservation, but those people are dealt with. 1 new guy in our platoon joked that he wanted to go waste a village and he had a black eye for the next 2 weeks. Every time a civilian was killed and we thought it was our fault we took it just as hard as we did when it was one of our own.

They have both done alot, but as we have seen hightened security can still be bypassed, the War in Afghanistan is draining them of men and resources.

Also as for the war in Iraq I have never agreed with that even when I was serving there, my view is that we should build up the iraqi government as much as possible and then leave as soon as possble hopefully.

Also you can have no argument against the Hiroshima bombing, it actually saved lives and came at a time when people did not understand its power and the effect it would have. President Truman maade the right decision to drop the bomb, even the Japanese emperor admitted that he would not have been able to convince his war cabinet to surrender if the bombs hadnt been dropped
