Celtic are set for a straight fight against West Ham for defender Shane Duffy.

The Scottish champions are attempting to seal a deal for the 28-year-old as boss Neil Lennon looks to add reinforcements in the backline department.

Duffy has a variety of options with Brighton aiming to offload him during this transfer window.

Celtic are involved in the race with the Parkhead outfit hoping to secure a loan deal which would cost them around £2million in wages for the cost of a season.

West Ham, however, are prepared to pay a full transfer fee for a permanent deal at a cost in the region of £5million.

Manager David Moyes has worked with Duffy during the pair’s time together at Everton and the financial muscle of the Londoners due to Premier League riches could give them a cash edge.

Celtic, though, are aware that Duffy’s emotional pull as a supporter of the club may also have a bearing on the centre-back’s decision making.

Newly-promoted West Brom and Burnley are also interested and willing to make an outright purchase, but Record Sportunderstands it is West Ham and Celtic who are the likeliest of the quartet to clinch a deal.

If the £5 million fee is genuine then get him in permanently now.

No point in * about with a £2 million loan fee for a season loan if he is available for £5 million.

Yep. Seems quite cheap, for that league anyway.

Seen somewhere he is apparently on about £40k a week so I don’t think it should be too much of a problem.

Around £25k a week should do it I think. Sounds like he wants to come here.

Sounds too cheap actually. Bit sceptical about that price but will take it no bother if it’s true.

If it's £5m, and it may be if he's leaving England rather than transferring within, I'd snap at that. This could be our new Johan/Bobo moment. Solidity at last back there, a platform for Julien and Ajer to play from...
If 5 gets us to the table, the pull of the hoops puts us in the driving seat with the player, and 30-35k pw should see us home! (Hopefully! :50:)

I really hope this goes through, i think both Jullien and Ajer will improve loads with a guy like Duffy next to them.

If he’s 5m it’s the biggest no brainer of all time. Get him in on 25k a week and give him a 2 million pound signing bonus to cover for the wage cut.

Haven’t been this excited for a potential signing in a long time. The guy is a * warrior and exactly what we need.

Could probably get 10k a week more in the EPL, a, permanent move is a massive decision for him.

If it's between us and West ham it's surely a no brainer. He won't be an automatic starter for West Ham, their strongest position in the pitch is their CB'S, he'd be going there as back-up.

Giving up a substantial amount of cash isn't a no brainer. No matter how much he wants to come.

Hope we get it done on a permanent but a loan probably more likely.

Diop is good, that’s about it. They are in desperate need of CB’s. I like Ogbonna but that Balbuena is shocking. He’d have a great chance of starting there.
