currently has to be tiger, when he reaches the top of the leaderboard he rarely lets go of a lead!others include dan carter(new zealand rugby),kobe bryant, alex zanardi..a man who had both of his legs amputated and has amazingly returned to the driving seat again and currently participates in the FIA world touring car championship..unbelievable!federer has to go down in history as the best ever tennis player although nadal is creeping up behind him!

Golf isn't a sport, in my book. It's a game/pastime. Neither is Motor racing. Sport is competition between athletes.

IMO, combat sport competitors are the greatest sportsmen. You need everything in that line - speed, strength, power, skill, intelligence, bravery, toughness, strategy, composure and every other intangible you can name that an athlete needs.

I think Floyd Mayweather or George St. Pierre is probably the greatest sportsman on earth.

I think you'd be hard pushed not to call Tiger Woods an athlete tbh, the technique and power he produces in hitting a golf ball whilst still maintaining direction almost defies science.

if you dont sweat your not an athlete, in my book. :bbpd: Don't get me wrong, the guys incredibly talented, but I can't bring myself to call a guy who strolls around a field swinging a 5 ounce club once every 15 minutes an 'athlete'. It's a good way for 70 year olds to stay fit, but it doesn't take an athlete.

There's not another human beng alive able to hit the distances he can with the same amount of accuracy, he's broken boundaries in golf. A sport you're being extremely flippant about, i don't play it but i can recognise the level of skill required having tried.

what did I just say? He's extremely talented. Im not flippant about the skill involved at all, it's immense. But its a semantic point - the guy strolls around and swings a carbon fibre club around once in a while he cant seriously be called an 'athlete'. Chess takes incredible ability, Im sure the tiddily winks and sharpshooting champions have incredible ability and talent but I can't call them 'athletes' with a straight face either. *, Cricket's REALLY pushing it.

Am i mistaken or did you just compare golf to chess? :97:

'strolling around swinging a carbon fibre clus' is extremely flippant. Woods is a well oiled athlete that has been training to be the best in the world since he was in nappies.

yes I compared it to chess. You dont need to be an athlete to do either. And my description is accurate whether its flippant or not, thats what they do - they walk a couple of minutes then stand still for 10 minutes then swing a 8 ounce carbon fibre club once. That might take a great deal of skill & talent but it does not take a great athlete.

Athlete:A person trained to compete in sports

Sport:An athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, wrestling, boxing etc

Your opinion does not mean its not a sport sorry bud.

It's hard to say who's the best when you comare lots of sports but he is up with the best no doubt.

didn't say it did, mate. Im merely stating that IN MY OPINION, calling a guy who plays the sport of golf the greatest athlete in the world is completely absurd. And tbh, i cant see what physical prowess golf demands other than superb technique. It's something real athletes do to RELAX and rest. I suppose if enough people start watching tidilywinks that'll become a sport too. Thats basically what constitutes a sport, isn't it - a competitive activity that enough people watch to warrant televising/reporting on. Totally arbitrary.
