05 side was just not the right blend. All huff and puff. Several once good players were going over the hill - like Thommo. Looks better on paper than reality. I hated the BBJ-Sutton pairing once Henke was away. I didnt like Stan playing wide right. Thommo was rubbish in the middle in a 4-4-2. It was the worst team to watch since before Tommy Burns was manager.

A lot of those ageing/inherited players helped win the league for WGS in his first season.

yeah but by WGS's arrival we were over 3 years into a slow unchecked decline of the squad and IMO the only player who subsequent career suggest had anything left after WGS's first season was Stan, a pre-MON player. All the rest were finished. Almost all the players who left us were done and had pathetic post-Celtic careers. I think with the plaudits he took for the first 2-3 years of success he must be criticised for 2-3 years of letting the team decline and showing no skill whatsoever in the transfer market in those latter 2-3 less wealthy years. He uncovered no Arturs, Skippys, Nakas etc and youth didnt get much of a chance as he stood by his aging favourites. I think we were mismanaged post-Seville and nothing but slow decline happened.

but WGS's 1st team was a huge improvement on MON's last because of a few crucial changes - he Brought in Naka and Artur and he made wee Shaun a first pick. Magic was also a great buy before he imploded. Those changes made us a much more skillfull, easy on the eye team. The team suddenly had 3 or 4 really excellent new players at a total cost of only a few million quid. The option of finding excellent cheaper players had been there for MON too but he hadnt exercised it over a three year period.

I'd agree with most of that although Maloney was a great find by MON and had a fantastic season under WGS. Every bit as good as Petrov.

It's really easy to point the blame at Douglas but as others have said, it's never about one player. Way too unfair to do that.

Everyone knows that we should have strengthened after Seville and we didn't, hence our team got older and we slowly started regressing. We were still a good side but not as good and we weren't very clever to watch if truth be told. I think if you were to be sat with Lawell one on one in a room and asked him if it was a mistake not giving MON cash after Seville, he'd admit it was.

But then in saying that I was never that impressed with MON's transfer dealings. Sutton, Thommo and BBJ etc were quality but I think Strachan has the mark over him when it cmes to picking up good young talent on the cheap.

The difference is MON inherited a much stronger side than WGS did. MON had Mjallby, Lubo, Henke, Lambo, Petrov all in their prime. Among some top young prospects like Maloney, Colin Healy and Liam Miller. WGS inherited a team from MON that was getting old and some of them past their best (i.e. Sutton, Thommo, Balde, Hartson, Lenny) but he had McGeady, so...

But I still think MON would not had his level of success if he did not have King Henrik. He prob gave a big thanks there to Wim Jansen and also Jozef Venglos for Lubo, then also Barnes (yeah, believe of not) for Petrov. Probably 3 of the best players MON had during his charge. Then he also brought in Lennon, Thommo and Sutton who were also great players.

I'll dispute it. In 2004/2005 David Marshall played in 18 of the league games and we lost 3. Overall we lost 6 that season so how can Rab Douglas be blamed for that season? 1/2 of the points lost that season were with Marshall in goals.

As poor as he was (at times) to pin the blame on not going for 9 in a row on him is ridiculous. If we were going for 9 in a row would you be saying "Thank * we had big Rab Douglas during that period!!".

The"strong"team that MON inherited finished 21 points behind the Huns prior to him taking over.FACT.I wish people would remember this before posting what a great group of players he took over.

Are we not all getting bored with these constant comparisons between WGS and MON?
