Celtic skipper Scott Brown now among club’s top 10 most decorated players after Hoops win Premiership title

SCOTT BROWN has entered the top ten of most decorated Celtic players after winning his 15th major honour with the Hoops.

The former Scotland star captained Brendan Rodgers’ side to an Old Firm romp against Rangers at Parkhead today to clinch Celtic’s seventh title in a row.
And his latest winners medal has propelled him into the top ten of Parkhead’s all-time, most trophy-laden players and managers.

And Celtic winger James Forrest, who netted today, isn’t far behind now after collecting 13 trophies at the age of just 26.

Brown has now won eight league titles, four League Cups and three Scottish Cups. He also won a League Cup with Hibs ten years ago.

Forrest has collected seven league titles, three League Cups and three Scottish Cups.

Brown is now only one major honour behind Neil Lennon, who collected 16 trophies – 11 as a player and five as a manager.

Hoops skipper Brown is now tenth on the all-time list jointly with Jim Craig and Jim Young, after overtaking Danny McGrain, Bertie Auld and Jim Brogan.

The current top ten are are led by Willie Maley with an astonishing 34 trophies.

Next come Billy McNeill with 31; Jock Stein, 27; Bobby Lennox, 25; Jimmy Johnstone, 19; Bobby Murdoch, Alec McNair and Jimmy McMenemy 18; Neil Lennon 16; Scott Brown, Jim Craig and Jim Young, 15.

CELTIC captain Scott Brown has lauded yesterday afternoon’s title-winning display as the Parkhead side claimed the title with some style.

Brown has skippered Celtic to seven successive championhips and won eight in his 10-year tenure at the club.

But he admitted that the win against Rangers was laced with an additional layer of enjoyment.

“It’s lovely, the way we did it, in the sunshine, in front of our own fans by beating Rangers,” he said.

“It was all about our own performance today. We let ourselves down last week against Hibs but we managed to bounce back.

“We had spoken about bouncing back in style and we did that today. I think the start, the way we pressed, we had worked all week on that in training – how we were going to press, how we would get it straightened out on the park.

“It’s the first time the title has been won against Rangers for a long, long time at Celtic Park.

“So it’s a great honour to be here and be part of it. There have been a lot of good wins against Rangers recently but, for me, that has to be right up there.

“Just the emotions of today, how we played, the style and just managing to play how we wanted to play, that made it special. It’s all come good at the right time.”

It was five going on more yesterday but Brown was reluctant to allow any cloud to darken Celtic’s horizon.

“There were no disappointments,” he said. “Look at the way we played. We felt we could have scored more. We created chances, they just didn’t go in.

“It’s very sweet. It’s all about us today, the style we played. We let ourselves down with not being able to win the league at Easter Road. But we had a good week in training and it showed on the park.

“It means a lot to be captain as we’re winning seven in a row. But there is a lot more work ahead now, with a Cup final to come as well.

“There are places up for grabs in a cup final now, so everyone will be wanting a chance and I’m sure the gaffer will rest a couple of players here and there.

It’s all about our willingness to win now, to keep producing that form every week. We’ve got a few hard games coming up so we need to stay on it.”

It's a worry. I know I'll cry like Messi holding Iniesta because it's going to be the end of Broony's era, the guy who is the backbone and heartbeat of the team.

You are right though, we need to spend a lot of money to replace him. Maybe it'll take a few games till the board realise how important he is/was. Hopefully the board already appreciate it and are in flux because how do we keep our budget intact while spending that kind of money. I totally respect our financial policy but we need a captain who can grab a game and inspire the whole team like the 3 2 game at Ibrox.

Broony is a warrior, playing in the perfect position, we are going to miss him deeply unless we get lucky and sign another Victor but even then, those players leave for big money, we need someone who will stay and be happy with our structure.

I think we should sign the Hibs player now so he can learn from Broony. I know he was offered a MLS contract and he seriously thought about it until someone wise advised him it would be a bad idea for a young player with so much talent because the game is so much more enjoyed if you have talent and play against teams who are on a different level, how do you stop them? Lenny has been a blessing for them and hopefully he has words with him and tells him to join us before it's too late. I think he would stay.

Well deserved, he started at Hibs but after a few years with us he became pure Celtic.

Statistics are in the eye of the beholder.

Maley was amazing and loyal obviously but it's all about Fallon and Stein.

He should make it no bother, Lennon played for us until he was 36 and Lambert until he was nearly 34 and Brown is probably fitter and quicker now than they were when they were 30.

No reason he can’t. If anything his game is actually less dependent on running than it has been in the past. His experience at closing down space, showing for possession and generally keeping play ticking along mean he has the ability to be a mainstay in our team for years to come.

I think he and the Manager will bow out in 2021 with their place in Celtic folklore assured.

Top class. Well-deserved award after a brilliant season. One more big performance needed.
