Don't think it's coincidental that Boyata's performance significantly improved, when Jozo was sent off.
I fully accept he made a really poor decision when Morales got through 1-1, but when down to 10 he did what most defenders are happy at, blocking and clearing his lines.

Under Delia it was Ambrose, now it's Jozo and DB getting pelters.

The truth is MOST (not all) defenders aren't comfortable in possession, and aside from switching play from side to side, most struggle to link or run into midfield successfully. VVD is obviously an exception, which explains why he is now worth £75 big ones.

Ajer looks consistently comfortable on the ball, and in reality is the future of this teams defence.
Weirdly both DB and Jozo need to study and learn from one of our youngest and most inexperienced players

I don't see the correlation between Boyata's bombscare moments and Jozo?

Agree that majority of defenders not at ease stepping out but they are gauged on ability to defend and certainly basic defending which the first goal is shocking from someone who is experienced and not a young kid. Takes chances/risks which simply don't need to be taken which doesn't promote confidence to many.

Given time on ball and time to actually think he can be a danger to team, as proven today. Match fitness only covers 10% of today as his awareness of his immediate area when he almost conceded another was of great concern.

Awareness, concentration etc seems to totally drift at times.

Boyata's * ups today had * all to do with not being comfortable in possession, but rather someone INCAPABLE of doing the most simple expectations of a central defender - clear your lines, and make tackles.

    Absolute horror show.

Anyone know why Stevy Gerrard was in attendance today?

I do. And I think the point being made by a few posters is that Boyata got to concentrate on defending first after Jozo walked.
He tried to pass for the first, with the outside of his foot! Gave away the free in the build up to the second.
The 22 million buffalo rolled him in the second half for his one on one that Bain saved, which was after Jozo went but mostly he defended better when we were down to ten I thought. But still, I was disappointed in him overall. You can call hindsight but I honestly would've started Compper.
I think Brendan went with what he knows (as most managers tend to do) but if Compper plays a few games between now and the semi I think he'll start it.

I still don't see it, but fair enough. Maybe I'm missing something obvious.

We have to remember our team is a work in progress for Brendan and it's not all going to be ok in a season or two. Paradoxically we have a manager who has a good footballing brain, is a deep thinker and master strategist who seems (in our eyes) to get it wrong now and again. By the time we do 10 (if we're allowed to) I envisage a whole different back lineup. We don't know what's going on behind the scenes or what his thinking is but we do know he's a winner, a Celtic man who bleeds when we do. We level criticism at him when we haven't a clue. How can we understand some of his decisions when he's thinking on a totally different plane from the rest of us.....the guys a genius :56:
