KIERAN Tierney said that recovering from the broken leg injury he suffered as a teenager has helped make him the player he is today. He also explained that he is loving life at Celtic and learning under captain Scott Brown.

Speaking in Dubai at Celtic’s winter training camp, Tierney recalled the injury in December 2014 and said he used the adversity as motivation to propel himself towards the goal of achieving his Celtic dream.

“The broken leg made me think about how much I appreciate where I am,” said Tierney. “I remember the day after I made the bench against Ross County was the highest I’ve ever been, and a day later I broke my leg. But it made me a better player and a hungrier player.

“It gave me a taste of this and I knew I didn’t want a leg break to be an excuse, so I worked very hard and I made my debut at the end of that season.

“I always said making the bench made me hungry. I was buzzing going out to warm-up and even though I knew it was unlikely I’d get on, to warm up at Celtic Park gave me a wee taste for it and I just wanted more and more.”

Since then the young Hoops defender has established himself as one of the brightest talents to emerge from Scotland and the 20-year-old said that having Scott Brown’s as a captain has inspired him further.

“With Broony you see he works hard in training every day, plays every game and never wants to have a rest," Tierney said. "He just wants to keep going and he’s the perfect captain for our team. For me, to look up to him and be on the same training pitch with him is brilliant.

“I’m looking up to Broony and he doesn’t call this work either. He just loves football. He loves playing and loves training. He’s a top professional so hopefully I can aspire to be like him in that way.”

As Tierney reflected on his Celtic journey so far he also looked back on how big a role his parents have played in his success. The 20-year-old admitted he has a good life at home with his family and is in no rush to move out of the family home.

“Growing up, I always wanted to be a footballer, but for my mum and dad it was quite sudden,” he said. “The next thing they knew people were wanting pictures and autographs with me. It’s hard to adapt for everyone but I’m trying to do my best.

"My parents do so much for me and they never stress me. They do everything they can to help me on the football pitch and they’ve done that since I was seven. That’s why I’m so grateful for them and try to do the best I can for them."

Nobody else would get a steak with big Bobo there. You'd just deliver a cow to the table for the big *!

Tell you what, if there’s two guys in our squad who deserve a massive rest it’s him and Broony. Must have some amount of minutes already this season.

Broony, Lustig and Tierney have played more minutes than any other players in Europe this season.
