    CELTIC have warned Stuart Armstrong that they won’t be held to ransom after contract talks stalled.

    The Celtic manager is also keen to tie down key man Armstrong to a new long-term contract, but an agreement hasn’t yet been reached.

    SunSport understands his agent will need to be more realistic with their demands, though Celtic are aware that English pair Brighton and Southampton are keen on the £10m-rated Scotland midfielder.

    Hoops chiefs are willing to sanction a wage rise and an extension for the Scotland star, who has 12 months left to run on his current deal.

    They believe they have made a fair offer to Armstrong, whose career has been transformed by Rodgers in the last year after he only became a regular in November.

    Talks are likely to resume but Celtic will not be forced into paying over the odds in wages, especially as Rodgers has plenty of options in the middle of the park.

    He's had one good season, was average to poor before Rodgers, hope he isn't overrating himself. If he leaves then so be it, we've lost far better players and been fine.
