The one position in the middle of the park I thought we could improve on was his so if he doesn't sign I won't be overly annoyed if we punt him.

Have to say I wouldn't be massively shocked if he moved on, he's been great for us this season but he's not a dyed in the wool celtic fan or anything, I imagine being brought in under Deila's term would be on relatively low wages, a new contract here he would probably double his wage, triple it down south easily.

His performances last season were as close as we have come to replacing petrov. Great engine, great worker, great return in goals from midfield and a player who can change a game. Would cost a lot to replace a guy who is already settled in BR's system and who still has plenty of potential to get even better.

It's funny because I read a few weeks ago that he was saying how much he would love to sign a new contract as he's enjoying it and it's been the best spell of his career etc.

Surely if all this was the case then the contract should be a done deal by now, because I would imagine the club would be offering him a big improvement on his wages.

It's the Celtic board, notoriously stingy *. Wouldn't shock me in the slightest if we were arguing over a few grand a week.

Still got no fear about this.

Another "theory" to throw in to the mix, he is studying law afterall, maybe he likes to deal with his own contracts? At least be a lot more hands-on with it. So while he has been on holiday and away in Austria, perhaps literally nothing else has happened yet and all plans are to sit around the table and deal with it next week?

Overall i can at worst see a stan petrov situation, where he will sign a new contract with the stipulation that he gets sold by end of next season to maximise our return. He will have ambitions that may be above what we can offer. Ambitions that may not be met, but he will surely want to try and see what impact he can make to a wider audience.
So expect him to leave in time, but also think he is a grounded and level headed guy and will be sensible about it.

Linked with southampton... how much would you expect to get should that happen, 8-9m?

Can't see him going this window, if he has another stormer this season and performs in Europe then yes he will go. It will be down to different clauses, Lawell never misses a trick and certainly doesn't hand over contracts easily.

Not if he has <12 months on his contract. If he doesn't sign I think we will ship him out this summer for around £3m.

More than that for a player with less than 12 months on his contract ?

They can get him for free in 6 months, why would they pay £10million ?

Nah 3m is ridiculous no chance of it being that low 6 would have to be an absolute minimum

It's not ridiculous for a guy who's contract is running out.

He's a good player and hopefully he does sign a new contract but I think it's unrealistic to expect so much money when a guys contract is running out unless the buying team is really desperate.

I'd be really surprised if we're knocking back £3m if Armstrong has said he has no intention of signing a new contract. It's good money vs nothing 4 months after that, especially if we can use that money to get a replacement in.

Id rather lose him for free in a year than let him go for that low now, perhapd if by january if he signs a pre contract with someone we'd accept 3m but not now

Why would you imagine that? Do you think Lawwell has been sacked and replaced by "the Giving Tree" or something? :97:

He deserves it and he'll get a fair part of it; but he'll have to negotiate for it just like everybody else.

Either that or they're good businessmen doing their job properly. :giggle1:

Seriously, people, stop worrying too early.

    Mental post.

From October on he was our most consistent player.

I'd be tempted to keep him at £3m too tbh unless the money would be used instantly to get a replacement, but people are talking about knocking back £6m-£10m. Doubt you would even get offered that - no one pays full value for a player with a year left.

Likewise £3m in January after a pre-contract has been signed would be miraculous. You'd be lucky to get £1m I would think, as we've seen in the past.

Exactly as you said, he deserves it and that's why I'm sure he'll be getting a much improved contract than what he was on when he first joined the club.

Lawwell is a shred businessman, but there's no way Armstrong won't be getting a pretty decent wage hike.

Agreed, but it won't just be handed over. The point is that Lawwell will know we have to give him a wage hike and will be seeing how small a hike we can get away with. That's his job. Armstrong will have to negotiate his new contract like anyone else and that takes... time.

So as yet, there's nothing to worry about, in spite of what may have been said in the press. :50:
