I know people might think "bollocks, you would follow the money like the rest of us" but I really wouldn't. Not because I don't want it but because I would already have enough.

I'd play for Celtic for 5/6 years, move to Madrid to top up my tan and bank balance for 3/4 years and then come back for the last 4-5 years of my career.

Then move back to Madrid with my Spanish mistress.

As huge a Celtic fan as I am, I'd be equally content if I earned 5k per week anywhere else, as @Padmill said, a good ten years somewhere would still be cushty.

Have to be completely honest, if I was on 40k a week down south in my early 20s I would have turned out to be a complete and utter * and end up miserable :56:

£20k a week is more than enough. Playing for Celtic and getting that sort of money is the stuff of dreams.

£20k a year is more than comfortable to live off of.

I have already said I believe you but what I would add is, as a footballer at Celtic, your outgoings will rise dramatically - the mortgage alone would be horrendous as you aint gonna be able to ask for a 25 year mortgage when your contract runs for 3/4 years and the price of the house you would likely buy wont be cheap either. I have done a few bits of work for players up here and while the wages are decent/good the outgoings can be scary.

Speaking from a working class pleb's perspective - say i were a level headed football player on £20k a week.

Why in *'s name would I need a mortgage? I could save up money from 6 months wages and buy a house outright at about £300k.

20k a week is indeed a dream wage for most of us in here, but as has been said, it is for a limited period, and potentially a very limited period. You are only a leg break away from going out on loan to Dunfermline and the next contract being for a helluva lot less.

I can understand many people saying they wouldnt take the big move (money wise), but for me, youd have to take it. Not just to be greedy, but to make as much as you can for your family's future. It may well dry up at any point as a footballer, and you may well be pretty unwilling to go back to labouring or taxiing after your career, so you got to build that nest egg.

If you have been lucky enough to fulfill your dream of playing for the hoops, and doubly lucky that you got the big money move and could put enough by for the future, you could always come back towards the end and really appreciate it and enjoy it!

I did specifically say Celtic, reason for that is they will likely want more privacy and these houses tend to cost more basically. Yea you could save up for 6 months basically, not spending on anything else and have 300k but then again you still need to live as well.

Oh and by the way I'm 'working class' as well, I just remove the dishes before I * in the sink now :giggle1:

Star player because I'd be sweating blood for the hoops. If the EPL came in with loads of dosh, I would have to sit down with my wife to discuss and explain to her that the £15,000 grand a week is an extra bonus for playing for your boyhood idols. I would live within my means and happily knock back any club. But on the other hand there is the chance the board would play the wrong card by using your love for the club as their bargaining tool and that is really tough when you don't feel valued. Look at Jackie McNamara, that's what Lawell done to him and Sammy. Then at Man Utd, Wellbeck came through the academy and was a local lad who was Utd daft. Didn't want to leave but Man.U wanted Arsenals money and he took the chance of being frozen out if he refused to move.

I think also, people are inclined to forget how vulnerable we all are to keeping up with the Joneses. These guys get very used to their lifestyle very quickly, and it would be impossible for most to not check out what those on the bigger wages have. ie, the £2m house as opposed to the £300k one. They dont clear anything like £20k if they pay tax, and they pay N insurance as well as high personal insurance, and agents fees and their spouses credit card!!! I can see how it would appear to diminish in their eyes!

They may be rich to us, but they might not necessarily feel it!

I understand why you would. Think you have a glancing affection for the hoops as opposed to fanatical. Maybe your view will change the more you become invested.

You are right, im way down the list in terms of fanaticism, more than 'glancing affection' though!

When i was younger, i was more invested in it.

I wasn't implying you weren't chief, wasn't even considering anyone bar myself when I posted that :50:

Erm, I think pretty much that you could buy a house somewhere at (again, the £300k figure was just a suggestion at what a pretty big house you could get) with plenty of privacy - not as if they'd be living up a tenement cloase or up a block of high rise flats where you have to share a rubbish chute!

Anyways, I'd be more than happy playing for the club of my dreams on £80k per month......even if I was on super tax which took away approximately half my wage, and left me with a paltry £40k a month, saving half of that for a house.......£20k a month? * sake....

Outgoings are only scary if you let them be.

The only way I'd leave us is if the club didn't want me anymore :shamrock:
