Sometime you get a full-back who tears up the pitch and creates almost more than they defend, players like KT, Agathe etc....other times you get a full back who is more focused on defending like a Tom Boyd...Lustig in my opinion is defense focused, however he does get forward and to be fair has the ability to put in some amazing crosses and through balls.....yeah injuries have plagued him and there is no doubt with age he appears to be less prepared to charge up the line and then charge back.....but still rate him as a solid full-back who has the knowledge and experience to work in Brendan's 3 at the back option.

How long is he out for? Looked like it could have been a fairly nasty one as he took studs at full pelt but hoping it's just bruising.

Celtic defender Mikael Lustig has made the shortlist to be named the best Swedish defender of 2016. The 29-year-old has been impressive form for club and country this year.

Expressen have revealed the nominees for this year’s Football Gala awards, and Lustig has been included among the best defenders, along with Benfica’s Victor Lindelöf, and FC Krasnodar’s Andreas Granqvist. Lustig will find if he’s been successful when the awards are televised in Sweden later in the month.

Another award which Celtic’s Lustig will be in the running for is the Golden Ball, which has been dominated by Manchester United star Zlatan Ibrahimovic in recent years. The forward again is likely to be the favourite to pick up the award after his key role in PSG winning Ligue 1 last season, and also helping Sweden qualify for Euro 2016.

    He'll retire here.

Solid player, a guy I have very rarely had to criticise lately. There was a spell at one point where he was going through a lot of injuries and was frustrating me but he has been in solid 7/10 type form(and more on occasion) for a while now.

Loves the club and has more big game experience than any other RB we could afford to buy.

I didn't expect much support on this topic but respect everyone's right to an opinion and I have thick skin .
The lower divisions are full of FB's who can deliver balls into the box and would continue
to do it in our side - anyone could !
He defends mostly because he is of limited ability then spends most of the game passing the ball back to the guys who have just given it to him as he is not creative .
The acid test is when you have your back to the walls (CL) and everyone has to be accountable !
I watched the Bhoys for the first time in 1952 and have done ever since - even driving there and back in the same day when I moved down south so have seen a lot of games -also played to a decent standard myself.
How did Kenny Miller out-jump him in the old firm game ?? I have watched that happen so many times.
I have watched him in most games and he is marginally better than Efe !
He loses players and does not win many of the important headers and gets turned too often by decent wingers !
How much did he get paid to turn his back on a shot for the Borussia goal -something I, even as an *, would have been dropped for.
Sorry but he is an average player in a strong side.

Wouldn't pay too much attention. This guy is obviously a failed full back, had it in for Hinkel and Naylor big time, and has an obsession with players turning their back on shots.

Also didn't rate Forster or Rogic either.

Struggling to find a positive post actually :56:

Was it no Sviatchenko culpable for turning his back away in Gladbach anyway? Have to watch it back..

He talks absolute waffle about Lustig going forward. I'm sure when we were being exposed under Ronny and he was carrying injuries, perhaps but if he thinks Lustig isn't positive, then I can't help him. I've said loads on here that Lustig puts in great balls, to perfection at time's. Always link's up with moves. I suggest he watches our move the other month which he started v Killie and ended up with Griff winning a penalty.... Who was beyond Griff in the box? Lustig. Did he forget one of the goals of the season with Lustig at home to Motherwell, which again was a move he started last year..

No doubt all his goals, runs, and assists will be against diddies though, so they don't count..

Forget Sweden as well and the fact he's up for 2 awards as well..

Lustig and "average" don't belong in the same sentence.

He's played in the CL on numerous occasions, and has been more than capable at that level. He's also played 55 games for a fairly decent international team, playing at major tournaments.

Thanks for the mature * replies -doesn't change my opinion !
Looks like we won't be buying any more RB's from Sweden if he is the best they have.
Good luck lads -trying to get up for the Barca game or, failing that Thistle or Accies so
    will see you there.

There's having an opinion, but there's also just being wrong.

    You fall into the latter.

Remember it was Lustig who got us off to a start in the Red Imps game when it looked like we were going to have one of those nights. I like his attacking instincts and his defensive qualities. I think he links up very well with our right wingers too.

Louie when you say there are plenty of players better than him who would cost peanuts you really have to mention who they are because it's easy to make such a statement. I'm sure if there were plenty better than Lustig then there would be plenty better than other players too.

I don't know if I want to meet a guy called Leadpipelouie at the game :giggle1:

Is Lustig the only player you really don't rate in our team or are there others? Your opinions are perfectly valid btw, you can like or criticise whom you please. There are some people who rate Bitton and some who don't. It's not an exact science. What did you think of young Ralston when he played pre season? I thought he looked like he has potential.

If you don't like Lustig * are your thoughts on Gamboa?
