Celtic manager Gordon Strachan believes the Old Firm will eventually be allowed to join the Premiership.

That has been the aim of the Hoops and Glasgow rivals Rangers for a number of years, as they seek to leave the Bank of Scotland Premiership for more lucrative fixtures down south.

So far the door has remained closed to them but Strachan, whose side take on Fulham in a Craven Cottage friendly on Saturday, was convinced it would eventually happen.

He said: "It would be good for everybody, although we would have to make sure the rest of the Scottish league would be safe and prosper. That would be my main concern. "I lived in England for 21 years and I know that everybody, apart from some of the teams that think they might get relegated, would love Celtic and Rangers to be in the English League.

"I think it will happen eventually. Celtic and Rangers will get together with the top teams in England, yes."

And the former Coventry and Southampton manager was also convinced his club would be more than capable of holding its own.

He said: "Celtic can compare favourably with most clubs in the Premiership, that's for sure."

Strachan has been busy trying to bolster a squad that has seen a number of players from the Martin O'Neill era depart.

So far four new faces have been recruited and Strachan wants at least two more with Japan international Shunsuke Nakamura, the Reggina midfielder, still at the top of his list.

He said: "We are trying to be choosy about who we bring in. It would have been easy to bring in loads of Bosmans who are 30 years old.

"We are trying our best to bring in players who will help the group of players who have been here for the last five years - Lennon, Sutton, Hartson, Balde, Varga.

"They need help, not from players who will be dragged along by their coat-tails but who can get in there shoulder to shoulder and try to win trophies."

Nakamura would certainly fit that bill but his superstar status in his homeland means he is not a man who can change clubs instantly.

Strachan said: "The lad wants to come - contrary to reports - and he knows about the club. We would like to have him here. :50:

"He is a left-footer with a good change of pace. He would bring vision to the team and charisma as well I suppose.

"But it is a massive deal. He is a huge personality in Japan and a lot of media rights go along with him. That is what is holding up the deal but I'm sure we will get round that."

Didier Agathe, Alan Thompson and Stephen Pearson are three players Strachan has inherited from O'Neill but cannot yet play.

He said: "Since May 10 first-team players have left and that is a lot by anybody's reckoning.

"Three have also come back with old injuries - Agathe, Thompson and Pearson - so that makes 13 from last year's squad.

"I spoke to Martin and he said he thought we were a bit thin on the ground then. Well, we are even thinner now.

"The bonus is that we have a lot of young players with us and I must congratulate the youth team coaches in the last four or five years because the kids I have got are intelligent and technically decent, especially the attacking players."

Thompson's absence is the result of a calf injury picked up from the Tennent's Scottish Cup final victory against Dundee United in May.

Strachan said: "It has never really cleared up. He has done a lot of running but as soon as he puts his boots on he has a problem.

"Didier Agathe is the same. For the last two years in pre-season he has a problem with his calf.

"Stephen Pearson has had a reaction to the hernia operation he had."

One man who will not be taking part at Craven Cottage is goalkeeper Magnus Hedman.

Strachan has installed 20-year-old David Marshall as his current number one and has signed Poland international Artur Boruc to challenge him.

He said: "I'm expecting him to move on. Everybody has agreed it is time to move on so he has been busy trying to do a deal with other clubs."
