CL and European Cup same thing?

A lot is made about last 16 qualification, but as i see it we won the *, reached the final twice and the semi's 4 times, correct me if i'm wrong.
Has the press deluded us into thinking this european elite competition is not the same thing because the format has changed, or is that a tournement of the past and done and dusted?

Yeah for some reason its called the "champions" league now even though youve got 4th place english teams in it which is utter bollocks. And us as Champions have had to qualify for it before, which again is utter bollocks, Its all about money now where the so called big clubs pull the strings. man u and liverpool won it when they werent even champions of their own league ffs!! I think it should revert back to a straight knock out format but I cant see that happening. Anyway our names on the trophy thats all that matters

 

It's the same but now if you * up you get another chance in the league format until you get to the last 16 then it's a knockout.

 

Whilst its classed as the same as you play for the same trophy ,i believe when we won it it was a greaer achievement as it was a cup style draw and you had all the champions in europe involved ,,Nowt for 2nd place in the league back then apart from UEFA Cup ...Its a mockery these days when you have teams finishing 4th in a leage that can win the CL

champions are champions , no need for teams who arent champions getting into comp by name they have no right of entry

when not only the champions make it, when years ago the original name was to confirm the 'european champions' ? as in a team from each nation taking part

Obviously same competition. Liverpool were allowed to keep the trophy when they won 5 European Cups. Most of them prior to the CL format.

Yip thats so true it's the money league nothing more, it's not a champions league at all now, as one said 4th in EP get a place it's a take the * * league, why on earth should there be seedings? who says the likes of real, barca, man who etc etc etc etc are the best in the world? we have beat the best of them but every year we still have to fight to get through to league stage, all the teams should be put into one big bowl and picked at random then u would see who is the best team in europe, instead of these so called big teams getting the easy way through to the final, it's *, same as the wrold cup and the euro cup, should have no seeding at all, it's a * joke

 

Differnt format same trophy.

Liverpool have won 5 European Cups. One of them was a couple of years back in the Champions League, so they obviously count it as the same thing.

Was a better competition as the European Cup. Only the champions played

 

Does anyone know if, depending on the draw, you can actually go through the entire tournament and win it without actually playing a domestic league champion?

If so (or even if you only need to play one champion) then it shows how tough it was in the "good old days".

In 1967 we had to play the Champions of Switzerland, France, Yugoslavia, Czech Republic & Italy.

In 1970 it was Switzerland, Portugal, Italy, England & Holland.

Same trophy, totally different ethos.

 

It is tougher to win it nowadays for one simple reason.

You have to play a lot more games.

 

The old European cup was the greater achievement because it was played between champions and won by champions. The prestige of all football tournaments is being deminished and its largely down to the governing bodies and the influences of money and television. Even international football since changing the rules about eligibility has diluted the prestige of matches. If you flew over belgium in your ma's womb in the front of your uncles son's best mates plane then you can play for Belgium etc etc. All a load of crap. Champions league should mean Champions only.

 

Discounting qualifiers in the old days you played 9 games in order to win it.

Today you play 13 .

Yet in the old days their was no cushion of the group stages where you could lose a game and go thro, no team feilded weakened teams as they were already thro and you only played champions!
