Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland have agreed "in principle" to play a series of three biennial "Celtic Cup" tournaments. An agreement signed on Monday commits the countries to arranging the tournaments on a league basis.
Home and away games will be rotated from one tournament to the next with each team playing three matches in each of the competitions.
Last week England distanced themselves from involvement in the tournament.
Commercial arrangements and fixture dates are now being finalised.
The old Home Championship, which included England but not the Republic of Ireland, was staged every year until 1984.

But matches between England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland were eventually scrapped because of increasing fixture congestion.
Last week Prime Minister Gordon Brown said he would welcome the revival of home internationals to ease the pain of Euro 2008 misery for the four home nations.
England's defeat by Croatia, following the failures of Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales triggered calls for the sides to face each other in 2008.
It is the first time since 1994 that no home nations have qualified for a major tournament.
The Republic of Ireland did qualify for the 1994 World Cup in the United States.
Scotland battled valiantly but finished third in a group including Italy and France, while Northern Ireland's fate was sealed when they were beaten in Spain on Wednesday.
Wales's campaign was in tatters after a string of early defeats.

the more they play together (the scotland team, funnily enough) the better they'll get playing with each other....or am i wrong? does not playing with each other make you better?

scotland, ireland, wales and northern ireland are teams that have rarely made any tournaments recently so why should we not have something to watch in the summer?

bet when the summer comes you'll be greeting about a lack of fitbaw where you can support someone

and what if mcmanus or brown got injured in training? it happens

Since when has representing your country meaningless *?
Wisnae that the other week was it? The team is Scotland and I for one am glad that were getting this on the go. Beats all the other * friendlies we play in. The national side needs to get brought together every now and again to work on things and bond as a unit. What better opportunity than this? And the English shat it.....

    Mon the Scotland

You wouldnae huv that tone if England were in it and dont say you would fs. Might as well go for it, gets the players used to playing with each other. Not as if they will have other commitments.

For starters Euro 2008 won't be taking place in the summer of Euro 2009... Secondly even if it was it would be a decent warm up tourney to get some more team bonding before the world cup qualifiers since none of the nations qualified for the Euro championships.

From the other posts it seems your claim that it's a "waste of everyones time" isn't all that true.

Much like the Kirin cup then(which might i add we still won without the Celtic players) These are the kind of games players can prove they should be in the squad for the important games, by denying them that oppertunity they may never get a chance. We can't just expect players and bonding to fall into place for the important games.

Also comment about being burnt out by Xmas... Maybe Celtic should look at their pre season schedual. Far too many games in all corners of the world in an incredibly short period.

oh and how we all love the glory of the 'Kirin cup'

    ffs man thats a nonsense.

my final say on this is ....... " GET A LIFE , THE SUMMER WILL INCLUDE THE EURO 2008 COMP, WE DONT HAVE TO CREATE A PHONEY COMP , GET TO * , LET THE SCOTLAND PLAYERS REST AND WE COME BACK STRONGER''
