Yeah and South Park has done much worse, and from what I've heard about this new show it's not even going to making fun of the actual famine itself.

Yup, The guys said it'll be the Irish take on shameless set during the famine.. Not a sketch show based solely on malnutrition and disease.

If it's just a comedy set during the famine, then there's not really much issue with it - after all, we've had plenty of comedies that were set during horrible times of tradegy.

Wait and see what it's actually like.

To be fair, there are more Family Guy episodes with a comic reference to 9/11 than without, almost!

Potato blight caused the main food group for the poor of the land to fail.
Unable to grow other crops through, lack of money to buy wheat etc and the knowledge to grow other crops+ time to grow etc,it became a case of starvation.
We live on islands surrounded by the sea,a rich source of food!fishing was controlled by the gentry.
Wheat and barley was grown in all 4 provinces of Ireland, harvested and sent to mainland Britain,as was 80% alcohol brewed on Irish soil.
A famine NO,a forced starvation of the masses.YES
It's all in the history books.
I make no difference between the nationalities of those who died.
Just the British * that murdered them

Thanks for the post Boom Stick.

The context as to why so many posters on this site would find the proposition of a comedy based around An Gorta Mor (The Great Hunger) abhorrent is that this is a Celtic supporters site. For many of us, this is personal. It was our relatives/ancestors who were forced to leave Ireland due to starvation. England deliberately withheld help to the starving Irish, insisting that the market price for foodstuffs grown in Ireland remain unchanged, way beyond the price that the ordinary Irish people could pay. The market was considered to be sacrosanct by those who were in a position to provide help, and if a million people had to starve so that the market could continue to function efficiently, then so be it. The name Trevalyan is right up there with the * Cromwell. This is what so many of us would find objectionable about the thought of such a program being made, especially by an Irish person. :shamrock::shamrock::shamrock:

I believe the majority of the people on this website are well aware of the true nature of the famine. I find it hard to believe anyone can be angry or sickened or whatever about the idea for this show other than out of the 'oh we should probably be angry about this'. If the comedy is funny then whats the problem? People are so willing to be outraged now they wont let an Irish guy write a comedy about something that happened in the history of his own country. And for the people that argue that brit co Ch4 are producing it, Ireland dont have a very good track record of funding original home produced comedy shows, ch4 does. If i had a comedy show I know who i would rather produce it

9/11 Jokes are constantly turning up in all sorts of films and comedy shows.

My particular favourite was in The Hangover, when discussing that masturbating in planes is now frowned upon....Thanks a lot Bin Laden. :56:

I think he is Irish:smiley-laughing002: Anyway he has a point RTE turned down Father Ted and TV3 are just ITV in disguise or they were dont know what they will show now with UTV Ireland on the air. The only thing RTE get right is their Gaelic coverage. Even SKY with all their money and technology lag far behind.

What we need is a comedy set in the twin towers on 9/11 to make a proper comparison. I am sure it would be hilarious

Other than live events, SKY is pish. Just buy the rights to old shows and repeat them constantly.

    Genocide not famine.

In my head though either everything is fair game or nothing is, I'd love to see an Irish company make something about killing brit soldiers for the reaction though.
