The social problems in Russia are a real problem. Racism and homophobia in particular are rife and almost regarded as socially acceptable.

Putin is using Homophobia and Nationalism, to cement his rule, he also has the support of the Orthodox Church because he allows things like this to continue, the so called Vigilantes can beat people almost to Death, maim them for life, all while showing their face on camera and they wont get in trouble, the person they beat up will likely lose their job or worse.

The state turning a blind eye to discrimination on this level, was used in the 30's by another as well.

Yes absolutely.
I've lived in Moscow for a number of years now and can quite honestly say bigotry is rife throughout Russia, much of it institutionalized, and basically regarded as politically correct.
Indeed, homophobia is basically state policy, with public acceptance of gay rights literally criminal and punishable by imprisonment or deportation as applicable.
Though especially in St Petersburg. Who can forget Zenit's open letter which basically read "Now we're are not racist, but no non-Slavics and no blacks should be allowed in our club. And homosexuals should be banned from St Petersburg."
Even people who I've considered intelligent, I've soon found to be riddled with racism, xenophobia, homophobia. and all the petty redneck bigotries. I recall recently a student referring to '*' as 'what everyone knows they rally are, but can't say,' with a roll of the eyes., and another that gays should be killed.......this kind of thing is stated quite openly in front of others and I cannot recall even the batting of an eyelid from anyone present.
The number of arguments I've got into with students regarding extremist views on sexuality, skin colour, religion, race, political opinion, immigration, basically any bigotry you can think up, really..........I'm upsetting myself now just thinking about it.

 

Any idea why they are like that is it to do with a rejection of everything communist or to much nationalism/ influence of religion ect

 

See with Zenit's fans weren't they misquoted slightly? Didn't they just want the club to sign Russian/Slav players sort of like the policy Athletic Bilbao have for Basque players?

Contrary to popular belief, the *'s had quite a fair bit of support in eastern and central Europe, in places like Poland back in the day I think.

 

Always just thought it was in Ukraine where the *'s had support and always assumed it was just about revenge to Stalin over the 1936 famine as opposed to ideological links then again as bad as supporting the *'s was the Soviet's weren't to far behind probably level with the *'s at lest in my eyes anyways
