A simple question: why do you support Celtic? True passion or politics?

What religious stuff do we bring into football?

And i used to support Celtic but ma Ranjurs supporting pals say Liewell is a * and has £90billion to spend on players so until he resigns and we sign Ronaldo, Bale, Rodriguez and the rest of the Real Madrid squad i will no be back.

Brought up as a Celtic supporter and at anytime i could have changed to another team such as Clyde as my cousin played for them or Cumbernauld United because they were my local team but i never even considered those options, not because they were far smaller than Celtic but it's just because Celtic were always part of my life and always will be no matter the good or bad times.
My wife and step daughter are now Celtic supporters (both shareholders).

Found out about 4 or 5 years ago that my Gran (on my dad's side) were born into a Celtic supporting family.
My Gran (* rest her) born in 1910 told me stories about when she was young, going to see the great Patsy Gallacher and how her dad, my great grandad went to see Sandy McMahon play for Celtic.

After hearing about that, there couldn't be any other team, now could there.

 

You're kidding yourself on if you think only the Rangers fans are guilty of this. For a start I've got a few friends who bring religion into Celtic-Rangers conversations. Though not entirely a religious thing "orange *" is religiously motivated. Orange order is more or less an offshoot of the church of England and that's just one example.

Its a minority but its there and don't pretend for a second that it isn't.

Also growing up I'd be asked "what school did you go to?" I'd answer St Ambrose and be told "Aaaahh good, a good Celtic man then?"

Conversations with yer mates over a pint don't count.

And the Orange Order is about as religious as Dawkins.

nah i dont believe our club is religious, irish identity yes not religious though

the way i see it i might be wrong the protestants from northern ireland moved to scotland to find work at the clyde at around early 1900's and brung with them their bigoted ways, orange order, protestantism over the top britishism if your no wan of us your wan of them beed rattlers

 

Yeah you are right they are hypocrites but so are a lot of religious organisations.

Anyway back thread for me it was not just the roots of the club but the magic that surrounds the club, though that magic is not as strong as it once was, it's still there. There is something iconic about the hoops and the history. There is no clue what the future holds for this mighty club, and that is also exciting. For me Man city and Chelsea have nothing about them, they are play things and their trophies are bought there future can be predicted as they will both dominate especially Man City but for me it's an empty success.

 

For me it was the name that started a very passive interest, slowly as I got more and more interested in football (which back in the day was pretty limited in Canada), I started to see pieces of what Celtic was about. Slowly I created an image in my mind what Celtic was and the more I learned, the more I fell in love. Now, for me, it's everything together. It's the name, the aesthetic, the history, the politics, the rebel factor, everything.

 

honestly don't know , started as a wee boy and no family connection .... now at 56 im a fully paid up celtic nut getting worse !!!!

 

My big cousin took me to a friendly when i was 14 at Parkhead,Celtic v Arsenal,Charlie Nicklaus's return,we won 3-2,i say we as i became a Celtic fan as soon as i walked into the ground.
I remember my cousin was * off as were 3-0 up at one point,also we went into the General Wolf Pub,i had my first ever pint of beer,i remember learning my pretend date of birth just in case.
That pub has of course been long pulled down

As for your comment about religious hatred not counting becausenits in a pub and not Celtic park is just ridiculous. My mates have attended Celtic park so there ye go that got brought TO the football. Don't try to paint me as some idiot, I'm not the one with my fingers in my ears going "tralalalala"

To just have a broad statement like your last sentence here just proves you don't know much about their order as if you did you may have expanded on "what they are" and a statement like that isn't in someway discriminatory against these people and their ways? You see? Simple unthought of statements and you're right in there with those whom I speak of.

No doubt in my mind you'll have some argument for that but read your final line in this quote box a few times and come and pm me if you think I'm wrong.

Fact of the matter is that the hatred is a two way street and religion certainly comes into it.

I know what they are, what they stand for and their views and i hate every single one of them for it.

Is that bringing religion into it? Not for me it isn't.

 

My Grandad loves Celtic and so does my father. I don't need politics or religion to inform my decisions and I see football as a game. Supporters bring their views to the game. Again, sport should not be the measure of a society. It is the other way around. I see Celtic as a club that accepts and adapts and grows constantly and positively through the years solely because of its supporters. I could post on this forum, lift the phone or email any Celtic fan if I needed somewhere to sleep if I wanted to see a game or if I was stuck. I have witnessed this countless times. Regardless of what some people may say, Celtic supporters will banter and have the craic and they represent their club impeccably.

 

I was taken to a few Celtic games with my Grandad and Dad at a young age and fell in love with the whole atmosphere and the feeling of watching them play. Been glued to the tv watching them and regularly attending Celtic Park ever since. Never been about politics or religion for me.

I don't see any problem at all with someone's support for Celtic being grounded in their religious or political beliefs. It seems to have become fashionable nowadays to say that neither religion or politics belong at the football but I think to take that view is to do an injustice to the club's history.

The club used to have a policy of allowing Catholic priests into matches for free and it also allowed open air masses to be held at Celtic Park which were attended by thousands. I'm sure everyone is also familiar with the story of Michael Davitt laying the shamrock sprinkled turf in the centre circle of Celtic Park in 1892. So you see, Celtic never really has been just about the football and anyone who states otherwise is simply wrong.

If some folk want to 'move with the times' and support Celtic because they like the strip or because they just enjoy the football then great, good on them. As long as they understand that for some people there is a lot more that goes into supporting Celtic than just a game of football. It's always been that way and I hope it will continue to be that way. Being about more than just the football is what makes our club special.

 

Exactly. Being from Fife if I wasn't born into an Irish republican Catholic family, I doubt I'd be a Celtic fan. I'd probably be a Dunfermline, Cowden or Raith fan. Thank * I was born a Kelly haha
