The Scottish Govts continued onslaught on drinkers! They seem determined to get the price up to 50p per unit, which would mean more tax money for them from the lower classes......sorry, a more health conscious population!!!

They seem to think it will stop people drinking, when all it will do is punish those with less, as they are more likely to still find the money, at the cost of something else. Ridiculous.

Something has to be done about Scotland's drinking problem. We're up there with some of the worst in the world when it comes to alcohol intake. We drink something like 30% more alcohol per capita than England...

If people are stupid enough to choose to spend money on drink over more essential products then that's their choice. Maybe some of the tax money taken from the 'lower classes' will help to ease the burden of the effects of alcohol abuse on the NHS?

I dont accept that....same as i dont accept the claim about smokers being a drain on the NHS either.

At some point in everyones life, they will need to use the NHS and go through the trauma of dying and disease etc....that does not change whether you smoke or drink, but what is a fact is, that smoker and drinkers pay a ludicrous tax tariff on the products they consume to such an extent that if they all stopped over night, the govt would have a serious hole in their budget!!!

Smokers in particular pay something crazy like 80% tax...which equates to £2000 a year in tax for a 20 a day smoker!!!!
Dont tell me they dont pay for their future health treatment!!!!

Its the same with drinking.....we all drink...who the * is to tell us to cut down? If we drink x amount, that is our choice. All this does is make it harder for poor people. Do you this increase will affect those on middle or upper incomes in the slightest???

Absolutely no chance will it make those people drink less. Nothing but a tax on the poor.

PS, do you know why this hasnt been enforced yet, because of the whisky companies lobby! How many poor people do you know that drink whisky?

Except it does mate. Smoking and drinking (to excess) hugely increases your chances of COPD, heart disease, cancer, stroke, even alzheimers's and dementia. The WHO says smoking is responsible for 1 in 10 deaths worldwide...

I could throw stats like this at you all day, question is... Is all the risk worth it for a crafty *?

Eh... Health professionals? The cost of alcohol abuse to not only the NHS but society in general is * shocking mate. In some hospitals 70% of A&E admissions are alcohol related, people with genuine medical emergencies are put to one side because some pisshead can't handle his or her drink, how is that right?

If this legislation makes it more difficult for people to abuse alcohol regardless of their income status, then I'm all for it.

    I'm not picky.
Except that smoking (like alcohol) does put a drain on the NHS. The amount of diseases that are greatly increased due to smoking shows this. As for the alcohol...well, you just have to see how busy the emergency services are at the weekend alone in regards to people having too much to drink.

It may be a ludicrous tax but people choose to smoke or drink (or do both). No one is forcing them. When I used to live in Scotland, I always found it funny when any of my family members moaned about the high tax on cigarettes...as they puffed away on one. That's almost as bad as seeing a person hacking their lungs up as they hold onto a cigarette! If you don't want to pay the ridiculous taxes on cigarettes then don't smoke. If you don't want to pay the high taxes on alcohol, then don't drink. It's not as if they are life necessities.

No we don't, although it is a rarity in Scotland :icon_mrgreen:

Not according to Alcohol Research UK.
It's not a "tax on the poor" - it's a tax on anyone who CHOOSES to smoke/drink. It's not a tax that singles out the poor from the rich.

Smoking does not put a strain on the NHS. Yes, you are more likely to have this or that......but by not smoking, it only means you have more chance of living longer.....but still the same * chance of being a burden to the NHS one day!!!

Whether you have COPD at 55 and die of a heart attack at 57, or have COPD at 85 and die of a heart attack at 87 is irrelevant, as you will still be a cost one day!!!

In fact, there is an argument that smokers save the govt money, as they die quicker, and no pension is required, and in the long run, probably require less treatment in their 55 years than they would if they were health conscious nonagenarians!!
Smokers and drinkers more than pay their way. I dont smoke myself anymore, but i did for a long time, and i paid 80% * tax for the pleasure!!! I have more than paid for any future treatment. 30 years at £3000 a year (for me as a 30 a day minimum man)

PS. yes, technicially you are right, it is a tax on your choice, but given that our culture is one where drink in particular is almost an integral part of our culture, it is effectively a tax on the poor! Most people drink to relax, or to forget in some more extreme cases......i can assure you, when you are poor, you really really need to relax sometimes just to escape your life.

Lets be honest, if all the poor people chucked smoking and drinking and lived to 95, the health service would collapse.....and every single MP or MSP knows this, but pays lip service to our well being. They dont give a *, they only care about votes, and their own careers.
