He's already a far better player than Thompson ever was..

Thompson was actually ok at time's for us, but a flash in the pan player who was one of the slowest I've ever seen. O'Connell has shown he'll go on to have a decent career, somewhere..

We should continue with O'Connell until the wheels fall off.

He's done very well but Sviatchenko should come straight back in when deemed fit enough

He's done nothing to suggest he should be taken out of the team.

He's still got a long way to go but he's already proven he can handle himself.

I think the lad has been excellent, I remember he got a bit part last year and I wasn't impressed but I wouldn't be concerned if he plays on Tuesday.

Really? id say his inability to handle the player coming at him and letting him get a shot off so easy in the hapoel game, and him not cutting out the cross for St johnstones 2nd where red flags.

Yup. Taking him out the team whilst he's in this form would only disturb his development. Why is a defender who is coming back from injury and not necessarily where he wants to be performance wise just yet automatically preferred to over a young defender who is at the top of his game right now with perfect health and match fitness to boot, of whom will only benefit from more game time?

Love that some on here are already turning on him.

Admittedly it was now or never for him to step up, or else he would just stumble through a career here. But credit where it is due, for his experience and age he has done really well so far this season.

I would much rather see O'Connell make one or two mistakes (as has been highlighted) and learn from them, than persist with the likes of boyata and Ambrose who clearly won't learn and will continue to serve up * performance after * performance.

At least with a youngster (and a competent and nurturing manager) he will be willing to learn from the mistakes and try to cut them out. Plenty time to further develop. And we shouldn't turn on him for one or two mistakes that are not costing us games. Give the lad a chance.

If he is costing us games, take him off. If he shows no improvement over a number of games/months bench him for awhile etc.

Don't jump down the lads throat at the silliest and honest errors he can and will make.

O'Connell's done very well so far, but no doubt that Sviatchenko will start Tuesday. He's been a bit slack at times and had a few iffy passes, but he's also shown great composure on the ball and decent defensive abilities when called upon, especially against Astana and Hapoel. He still has some learning to do for sure and Erik will come in to see the tie through but no reason to say that Eoghan can't still play a part for us this year.

He's done relatively well, but time for Brendan to now end this experiment now Erik is back fit.

It's a shame but we need our best players to play when fit. And when Erik is fit and ready he needs to come back in.

Experiment? For * sake. Give the lad a * chance.
He has came in for some preseason games and looked decent. Filled in as a young rotational player due to injuries and done well. Sure when erik, jozo and kolo are all fit he won't get a start - the odd sub appearance. But at times some of the guys will need a rest for a number of reasons and O'Connell will do just fine to come in and perform. I expect him to take his chances and every so often may be start alongside Erik.

This isn't an experiment, he is part of the first team squad and will play his valuable role.
