SCOTT Brown had the chance to crown an impressive European debut for Celtic with a last-minute goal that would have given Gordon Strachan’s side a 2-1 victory over Spartak Moscow.

But fear of a second yellow card caused fatal hesitancy in the penalty area and the chance was lost.

The midfielder was played through by Aiden McGeady and with only the Spartak goalkeeper to beat, it looked like a certain goal.

But speaking after the game, Brown revealed he thought he was offside and that if he played on, he risked a second booking and dismissal.

“I thought I was offside and I didn't want to kick the ball in case the ref thought I was wasting time,” he said.

"The linesman was behind me, and I couldn't see if his flag was up. I'd already been booked, and I didn't want another card.

“I also took a bad first touch and the ball was stuck under my feet, anyway. By the time I realised I was onside, the keeper managed to grab the ball.”

Brown was an impressive performer in the heart of the Celtic midfield as the Scottish Champions coped with the heat, the artificial pitch and the fact it was heavily watered prior to kick-off as well as their Russian opponents.

And Celtic now have the chance to complete the job when the sides meet at Celtic Park in a fortnight.

“It was a very hard game,” Brown explained. “The plastic pitch is certainly not the best, but we got the kind of result we went there for.

"We were a bit cautious because of the pitch and the fact we'd not seen a lot of Spartak playing. Once we got a bit more used to it, though, we were happier.

"We needed everyone to stand up and be counted, and I think that's what we got. Our players really are different class. They can pass and use the whole width of the pitch.

"They might try to press us at Celtic Park. But it is up to us to make sure we play the kind of football we can. And, of course, this time it will be on grass."

I can't believe any player would worry about possibly being offside to putting in the winner of a Champions League tie for their club.

Ok he's being cautious. But seriously get a grip man, it's not like you're gonna be booked for kicking the ball into the goal before the whistle's even been blown for offside.

Aye, don't get that one at all. If he had heard the whistle and kicked the ball away then ok, but there was no whistle.

He had about 2 opportunities to blast it in before the keeper latched on. Truth is he didn't even look at the goal.

Understand where hes coming from . He looked * at the end and thats not like him . When your tired your concentration goes . If he hadnt been booked and it was the first minute he would have put it away

I wont blame him too much. He was immense and was probably off his heid with exhaustion by then. He will be a real star for us.

first thought should have been to score.if he thought he was offside and he knocks it into the net i reckon he disnt get booked, if he kicks it away in disgust he gets booked.
play to the whistle. dont stop until the whistle blows.
hopefully lesson learned.
