At the same time though, would we have gone on to be as successful without using the rivalry as a vehicle for commercial gain? Make no mistake about it, the derby is the solitary thing that people around the world think of when they think of Celtic - annoying though that may be.

You're right mate, pre WW1 we won 6 in a row and Willie Maleys team at the time was regarded as the finest in world football. Their whole 'ethos' was born out of jealousy and bitterness.

    Bollocks.

People only think that because that is what was engineered.

We are not who we are because of some rivalry, they were who they were because of the rivalry not us.

We should have * ignored them back then, scumbags.

We had, and continue to have, a healthy worldwide fanbase (the best pound for pound considering the league we play in) and it had or has * all to do with the dead club.

What the board need to be wary of is wiping out our worldwide fanbase by watering down the very things that make us appealing to the people worldwide in the first place...

I thought the * pre sevco mob followed queens park then switched to rankers for some reason then obviously they had no one to follow when they became extinct so they ended up watching a sevco crowd that refused to pay the money rankers owed the world after a hundred years but yet for some reason sevco wanted the history of the extinct rankers team. they'll go back to watchin queens park cos history does seem to repeat itself.

It came about because two clubs were at it creaming fans of money, thats the short answer. Fans being ripped off, sound familiar?

I've always wondered how it started myself,so googled it and it's unclear too I found this bit interesting on the web tho.

"Opposing fans fought an on-pitch battle in the aftermath of Celtic's 1–0 victory in the 1980 Scottish Cup Final at Hampden. This remains one of the worst invasions onto a football pitch ever reported, and was instrumental in alcohol being banned from football grounds in Scotland.[8]"

    Really?
