Speed tests aren't really to be trusted, they test the bandwidth available to that particular device. So if you have a laptop, a couple of phones and a PS3 connected it's divided up between what's getting used by them, not what speed you're actually getting through your connection.

Happens to me every night at 10pm. It drops out completely and fails to detect the router. I'm sure Marie said it's the same with her at the same time.

I read on a sky forum that Sky will say it's your routers fault and it's faulty and charge £30+ to send you a new one. Not sure how true that is.

My router is sitting on my desk.

I am connected through Ethernet as-well, also the only device currently using the internet is my PC.

The speed on the router just dropped from 2656 to 1848 there, i'm guessing that means my speed is dropping..

Aye, phone Sky mate. Sounds like you're on the wrong profile for your line.

In the same bit you got the speed on the router there will be something in there saying Attenuation or Noise Margin or SNR. Let me know what it is or just screen shot it :50:

It has since went back up slightly.

    Line Attenuation Down - 56.0dB Up -30.5dB

    Noise Margin Down - 9.0dB Up - 15.15dB

Noise Margin should be sitting at around 6 so your a bit out, I've saw worse though.

Need to phone them, nothing you can do at this end mate.

SNR is about the bandwidth available for the connection, Signal-to-Noise-Ratio. It's about how strong the signal is compared to the power of the noise, this would mean he was getting more noise than signal in his connection if he were to be getting a bad SNR the laptop would most likely not pick this up. The SNR is affected by many things such as the temperature of the components in the router, environmental noise and the receiver side of the laptop. If using a cable connection then the cable also.

The noise margin is the amount that the signal exceeds the minimum acceptable level, if this is low the signal will be * *!

The attenuation of the signal is about the loss of signal power, this can be sorted out by a proper design of a router which sky already should have in place in not the router would need replacing.

    I know.

Sky can change the profile on the line though. It's easy enough to do so.

Aye, but I'm saying if any of those numbers are in the minus then the router is * and needs replaced :50:

Depends what kind of router it is, a lot of them don't show a minus. If it's an SNR problem replacing the routers going to do * all, needs sorted from the DSLAM at the exchange.

Always could be the router though, better to check first before going out and spending money to replace it.

Will be a simple case of them turning the speed down.

See usually most people will exchange the router cost free, if it does not work. I don't know if sky does this though. His distance from the exchange is obviously not going to help the SNR either.

    * it, where does he live we will both call round and investigate this matter. I will bring my sledgehammer! :smiley-laughing002:

Feel like I'm in work here :icon_mrgreen:

Aye, we exchange the router for free or at least jump out with another one to test it, think Sky charge £30 quid for it though the * :56:

Work for a reseller mate, resell BT and o2 mostly. Although o2's * off shortly as well.

Bit of both mate, office based but go out if it needs a visit. Depends what it is, got remote access to most things these days but if it needs a visit it needs a visit.
