"we ain't ready" is no excuse. our staff knew exactly who our opponents could be and it was their job to get the team ready. spartak might be a big number in russia, but we mustn't forget what we achieved last season and some posted we might be able to reach the semis this year. now everyone goes bananas because of an average european team.

IMHO past history is not necessarily the best measure in such an encounter. But I am fine with Celtic's overconfidence (though, admittedly it's mostly been puzzlement on this forum :)).

    moscow managers reaction

Spartak Moscow general director Sergei Shavlo believes there is all to play for after his side were paired with Celtic in the third-qualifying round of the Champions League.

The tie, which brings together two of the biggest teams in the competition at this stage, promises to be one of the clashes of the round.

"It's the first time Spartak have drawn a Scottish club. It's a good draw." Shavlo told the Spartak website.

"Celtic are an interesting side that play attacking football and have a good collection of players.

"We will prepare, and interesting games lie ahead. I consider our chances to be 50:50."

Spartak head coach Stanislav Cherchesov is equally excited by the prospect of facing the Scottish champions, but is refusing to make any predictions.

"Celtic are a strong opponent, who play in front of packed crowds when at home," he said.

"The team is sufficiently qualified and their play has changed for the better in recent years.

"But while we don't have all the necessary information and haven't studied our opponents thoroughly, there is little sense in saying anything concrete about them.

"It's not in our tradition to get ahead of ourselves and give predictions."

The first leg is due to be played on August 15 on the artificial turf of the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow before the return leg in Glasgow two weeks later.

Basel knocked out LFC that season, who were then knocked out by Celtic out of the UEFA Cup.

Fellas, I think you shouldn't really concentrate so much on the pitch. :)

My entry was not a slur, merely an observation.

By the same token, i hadn't heard of anyone who played for Artmedia, Neuchatel Xamax.

I would find it hard to beleive that you hadn't heard of Gravesen of JVOH either, if you follow International European football at all.

Kowalewski - the Spartak No.1 until this season - is a Pole, speaks Russian, etc. Didn't really seem to bring up Katyn at every opportunity.
