The petrochemical plant at the giant Grangemouth complex in central Scotland is to close.

Ineos made the announcement following a meeting with the workforce at the plant and its associated oil refinery.

The company said a decision on whether to restart the refinery would be taken once the "threat of strike action" had been removed.

About 800 people are directly employed by the petrochemical plant, with more employed as sub-contractors.

Workers leaving the staff meeting, which lasted about 20 minutes, told the BBC the decision was "shocking".

The refinery provides most of the fuel to Scotland, the north of England and Northern Ireland.

In a statement released after the staff meeting, Ineos said: "The company made it clear that rejection of change would result in closure. Regrettably, the union advised union members to reject any form of change.

"We have tried our hardest to convince employees of the need for change but unsuccessfully. There was only ever going to be one outcome to this story if nothing changed and we continued to lose money.

Workers at the site had been given until 18:00 on Monday to agree to the changes, which included a pay freeze and downgrading of pensions.

Unite said half of the 1,350-strong workforce had rejected the proposed changes to contracts.

Will prices at the pumps go up?

Are the Unions to blame here?

So much for the SNP...what did they do to help?

The scottish government should declare a state of emergency. Seize the place and get the army to run it, till they nationalise it.

here we go again ...Panic buying will start and prices will go up after a stable period has seen prices steadily decrease ....The workers will want people to feel sorry for them telling everyone they have had their pay frozen for a couple of years ..Welcome to the real world i say !!! everyone has had to take a hit they are no different ..The company was willing to pump in £300M if the workers accepted new terms ..Currently the plant is losing £10m a month something has to be done ....

    Excellent post.

The workers at Grangemouth would have been on a good wage, and i think they just got greedy. Bit like the London tube strikers, starting on 32k had them on the breadline.

So much for having a independent Scotland, when our ONLY oil refinery is half shut and on the brink of complete shutdown. SNP are stood about doing nothing, and seem out of their debt.

I am all for workers fighting for their rights, when their cause is just.

Hmm maybe a tad ott mate :smiley-laughing002:

Yep the good old Union, while everyone wants a pay rise and a good pension scheme they really are a shower of dicks. The Union had to basically guarantee no strike action until Christmas and they did not do that, says it all really ... No doubt the Union official's will be devastated at this , as they head off to the next union meeting and work out additional expenses to claim :47::31:

The tanker drivers out of Grangemouth are on around 45k a year and I heard they made a threat of going on strike because they were having to pay and extra 60p for their meals in the canteen :56:

FFS This company want people to forego their terms and conditions of their contract which this company ratified when they took over from BP. If they are allowed to try and blackmail people to surrender their contracts then it will open the floodgates for other companies to do the same. The Government have been strangely quiet in all this and I wonder if this is a path they wish to go down.

This strike was from feb this year.

It seems to me that the management have tried everything to try cut the losses at Grangemouth, and have been meet with strikes from the worthless unions.

This is probably one of the few times i will ever side with management against workers in a dispute.

One last thing, what are the chances of these workers gets a transfer to a refinery down south? They will be seen a trouble makers and strikers, and so will not be welcomed.

The dispute at the moment has nothing to do with the tanker drivers strike earlier this year.
