    I'm not picky.
They will never be banned in the US, but I really hope that the government can at least get tighter control laws and also more thorough background checks in place as well. I don't mind people owning a gun for protection but there should be more stringent laws in place to allow people to get guns. Unfortunately these kind of laws seem to be getting blocked at every turn.

    Haven't read the entire thread.

However, I used to believe guns should be banned, however now I am not so sure. I understand what the forefathers said is outdated today, however people generally blow the gun situation in the U.S. out of proportion.

The U.S. is massive - about 360m citizens, therefore you are likely to have lots of deaths by gun. It is no different to the U.K. and Scotland whereby there are lots of deaths by knife. I bet our deaths by knife per person is roughly on par with America's death by gun per person.

And, people who want to kill will do so regardless of having a gun - they will just use a knife!

I have also came to the realisation that you do need a population that has protection. What if the government became too powerful? It's too easy to pie everyone off who is saying this as 'deluded nutjobs' but have you saw some of the laws the successive presidents have passed? Honestly, I'd be fearful if I were a U.S. citizen. They are trying to pass a law (or already have) that will have you imprisoned BEFORE you have ever even committed a crime, as they deem you as a 'risk'.

The world is heading in a perilous direction, I'd be wanting to keep my gun.

Although, yes I don't understand why any average Joe would need a semi-automatic machine gun. :smiley-laughing002:

That took guts, he is completely right. Since when was an individuals right to bear arms more than an individuals right to live.

Depressing world we live in, i myself when i went to America fired a whole host of weapons from handguns, to semi-automatic rifles. The ease at which me, a foreigner, could do this was astounding. Simply i had to be 21 and showed them my drivers licence. The thing was the people who worked there assumed i knew how to load and fire a weapon, they didn't even ask i had to tell them... erm sorry how exactly do i use this?

When i was at the gun range i saw a man buying himself an $800 shotgun as a birthday present for himself, the thing was over 3 feet long! He was in and out of the shop in less than 10 minutes!

It is so commonplace and ingrained into their culture that no guns will probably never be banned, at least in my lifetime. Too many people are swayed by propaganda and fear. That mans speech hit the nail on the head, wake up people.

You probably also believe the death penalty to be a deterrent.

If they try and take the guns off them it could lead to an all out cival war. That may sound dramatic but it is what I believe to be true.

This will never stop for as long as guns are easy to get hold of, and it will not be to long before we see the next poor family making the same speech asking the same question.
Change the laws America or dig even more graves.

Should make it harder for crazies and dangerous folks to get their hands on a weapon but there shouldn't be a ban. Gun violence in the US is at an all time low and if it's only law abiding non crazy citizens who have the easy access it will fall further.

I tend to think it's the crazies and dangerous folk who are most vocal about opposing any kind of reform, which is understandable from their point of view.

If stricter testing came in you can bet that the likes of Sarah Palin would get nowhere near a gun.

In fact, to begin with they could implement a ban on-sight preliminary test. All you have to do is check the eyes of the person.

    For example;

Neither of them should even be allowed near a gun, never mind owning one. You see that vacant stare? That's a mixture of mental illness and strict religious beliefs.

    That's a no-no to start with.

And don't even get me started on this guy. His stare just screams out "i will shoot any black or Mexican guy who dares walk near my * house. simple".

Its something i wanted to do to experience it, i don't think its my * given right to own one.

No. Try arguing with a lot of Americans on Facebook. A lot of them have cowboy attitudes but in saying that, removing firearms completely opens a new can of political worms.

Sadly I would have to agree with you. I don't see it happening. I mean as things stand we cannot even get sensible reasonable gun laws passed although to be fair that has more to do with political corruption then a lack of support around the country. For instance for me just like everybody has to have car insurance I would suggest every gun owner should have insurance. There should be background checks across the board etc.

I remember as a child, everything America stood for in my child eyes, was a dream!

The music, the women, the freedom, the wealth, the weather and all that Hollywood threw at me was the dream, and just about every single person i knew, dreamt of America and all it had to offer!
Now, i would hate to be American.I have been a few holidays there, to the "nice parts' perceived as safe.
It does nothing for me in any way now......now i am an *!Thats not to say there are not plenty of good people etc......but as a place to live............nah!

If you have money, the US is probably the best place in the world to live.

If you don't though, it's among the worst in the western world.
