I thought it was funny when he was talking to the girl from Glasgow and she asked about his habit and when he told her she laughed and said "that's no a habit, that's a dabble".

Not many people use Methadone properly. Most use it as something to keep them squared up when they can't score rather than staying away from smack. It takes a couple of weeks to get Meth' right in to your system so you'll feel it when you stop. Smack's out your system in 3 to 4 days, if you use Meth' for those few days until the Smack is out of your system you'd be fine but unfortunately most people on a Meth' script stick with it then end up on it for years. I remember bumping into someone from school who looked like his whole world had been ruined, conversation went like this:

Awrite Barry, what's up with you?
I've just had my Meth' cut.
How much did they cut you down by?
10ml (the liquid has a 1 milligram per millilitre ratio)
    What you on now then?
    150 mil.

Most addicts are greedy and Meth does get you wrecked if you take enough of it. There's no way his habit was ever big enough to need 160 mg of Meth' a day. I think he'll be on it for life. You should really try and find your sweet spot with it: the minimum amount you need so you feel alright. 160ml might be great at first but it wouldn't take long before your tolerance builds then that's you carrying a massive Methadone habit.

I wouldn't worry about it mate, he's got his condescending face on today.

The guy is a bit of a hypocrite in my opinion.

I'm only stating facts here mate. You disagree with me or anything I've said about him? Feel free to point out where I'm wrong rather than pop in to the thread for a dig due to my posts elsewhere.

Type the name of the company into Google, there's stuff everywhere about it.

Again, I'm not saying that he's doing anything wrong or illegal. What he has done though is paint himself into a corner a little.

I think it's a disgrace that everyone who is willing to speak out with a differing viewpoint to rampant capitalism, or to talk about left wing values, is pilloried and castigated as some sort of nutter and should be made fun of.

I'm not a fan of Brand as a comedian or an actor, but I do like the fact that he is willing to speak out about what he believes in politically. His opinions are well thought out and relevant.

Is there anything in what I posted that suggests he's a "nutter" or that we should make fun of him?

I suggested that he's maybe not quite as big a political crusader as he makes out when the TV cameras are on him.

Fair play to him though, he's managed to re-invent himself and gain popularity through it all.

People have lives they have to live, though. I'm absolutely 100% against exploiting agricultural workers in the developing world and will publicly back any initiative that promises economic justice for these people; but I just enjoyed a massive great bar of chocolate (that made me feel better because I've been feeling very down).

The current system virtually forces you to choose between living a life of abstinence (no chocolate, no nice clothes, no alcohol, no electronics, no travel, etc- in short, none of the things we use to construct our social identities, stimulate our intellects or give us solace), or give up working for social justice, or be a hypocrite to some extent.

The media sparking off this kind of moral debate whenever someone with any kind of profile sticks their head above the parapet is a fantastically clever way of turning all of us with a passion for justice against each other precisely when we need to be united.

None of that compares to actively working to provide wealthy people with tax-breaks though, does it?

I don't think anyone expects Brand not to live in a nice house, drive a nice car and so forth.

    Maybe.

Or maybe Brand has very cleverly embraced the current political situation as a way to bolster his own profile? If you're against wealth inequality then surely you wouldn't be using loopholes in the system to actively encourage it?

Or is it okay for him to do it because he's going on some marches and saying the right things on-camera?

Yeah but, extremely funny and good looking though he definitely is, he wouldn't be sleeping with so many beautiful women, getting so much exposure for his ideas and moving in his social circles if he didn't. Like everyone else, he must be building a social identity for himself with the tools at hand and that involves greasing certain wheels. You are right that we can't rule out the possibility that he's a cynical, self-serving, hypocritical narcissist; but that shouldn't be our first assumption. He seems genuine enough to me, though I'm no expert at reading people TBF.

I think it's OK for him to want to fight for the disadvantaged and, at the same time, not want to take a massive cut in his quality of life, as long as he isn't claiming to be a saint or something.

I'm reminded of philosopher G.A.A Cohen's answer to the question of why he didn't give away most of his Oxford don's salary if he was so opposed to inequality. His answer was to freely admit that he didn't deserve so much money but that he never claimed to be morally exemplary and that this didn't change the force of his argument in favour of a more equal society.

Nope, on reflection you're right and I'm wrong, Dáibhí.

Nevertheless solidarity is paramount and we mustn't let them trick us into ripping into each other for our own faults, rather than standing together against much, much darker forces in this world. That doesn't mean turning a blind eye to what Brand is allegedly doing, let alone condoning it (if it is true); it simply means standing together with him regardless.

Much like most people would stand together with a rather unsavoury racist, elitist and imperialist * like Churchill against the much greater evil of the Nazis.

  18. I didn't know about that.

They obviously just have an addictive and greedy mindset due to being addicts.

The point stands that they are given them methodone with a view of using that to keep them away from heroin though.

What is he meant to do? Give up his wealth and live in a box before he can champion the rights of the common man?

Random Review is right, when we should all be up in arms about the rights and inequality of these people - handily highlighted to us by Russell himself - instead we are all arguing about the man himself and his life, his situation.

    Job done for the establishment.

There isn't a lefty in the world who wouldn't give there eyes to be living a better life.
