You're connecting two unconnected points with that one mate...

But on the rest I actually agree with you. We've shown through our scouting that we don't need to spend loads to bring in good quality, but it would still be very reassuring to see us splash out just a little bit. I know we've spent a fair amount already - a vast amount compared to many previous seasons - but this year has been unique and exceptional in terms of income. We've made 20 million pounds from transfers, freed up wages on a few players, and earned at least another 20 mill from last seasons CL run.
Plus obviously the summer is always a cash-rich time with all the season ticket revenue.

Please, please, PLEASE Lawwell bring us Finnbogason!!!

So you think the "above average" players out there are gonna come here to play in the Scottish league without the guarantee of CL football .....all I'm saying is we'll have a better chance of signing a couple of quality players once we're actually there.

    Btw...no offence was taken :icon_mrgreen:

I'd be happy if we signed Finnbogason and Capuano.

Did somebody just call Wilson 'crap' ?

I was part of the large majority of our support who wanted shot of him after his first season.. but last season he was better than any centre back we've had since Balde and Mjallby. This coming from someone who was a huge fan of Caldwell.

The only comment worth appreciating so far:50:

We've got plenty of cash and we should sign these players now we know we've a safe 20 odd million coming in:50:

Yeah Wilson's crap. I said it and watch the semi final again last year if you don't believe me when that big dud Daly bossed him about! He's got pace but * all else to offer! I'm one of the few who believes in Ambrose. Folk just pick up on his mistakes when he's really solid in the tackle and more importantly CAN use the ball unlike Wilson who'll now struggle for a game at Forrest:50:

Ambrose is weak, has poor positional awareness, is worse at headering than James Forrest and above all else, as a screw loose in his head which makes him think he can skin anyone.
Wilson was a solid top notch centre back. A 'Rolls Royce' I think lennon described him as. he glides through games.

Wilson was one of the most improved players we had in our squad. You picked out one game where you say he was bossed by "that big dud Daly".......Ambrose has had a lot more than one game where he was bossed about by a dud....Bangura ring any bells??

I understand we need to replace the big names we have sold; wanyama, hooper, and yeah wilson. but the signings so far have been good; virgil, Boerrigter, balde.
I still think we need to sign 'bigger players' but the approach so far as been a positive one....

felt the same as you mate. I do think we need a proven goal scorer but I just read this article n it made me think twice. I have quoted the part that confers you (n me n everyone else I can imagine)

" sales of three key players in Hooper and Wanyama, and now Kelvin Wilson, has only compounded this panic, with fans quite rightly worried about the possibility of not making the Champions League. The financial benefits that came from last years european campaign, around £21 million, additional ticket sales at around £4 million and the sales of the three players previously mentioned at around £20 million, leave the club at a total of £45 million up on our revenues in the season previous.

Combine these factors and you get a support that are desperate for at least Champions League group stage football, and want to see the club ‘open the biscuit tin’ and spend a relatively large amount of money on players with the intention of improving our team and guaranteeing qualification.

However, many can’t seem to see that it is not quite that simple for a number of reasons. First of all the club do not have £45 million to spend, we made a loss of over £7m in season 11/12, where we did not qualify for the Champions League, and on top of that our ticket revenue for last season will be down on that of 11/12 by around £2m due to the drop in domestic attendances by around 5,000 people. Additionally our season ticket revenue will be down again this coming season by around £4m due to the price reduction and we have already spent over £7m on transfers this summer. All of a sudden £45 million turns in to £24 million*.

Secondly, signing new players, even those proven at a high level, does not guarantee success. For example, say we signed Alfred Finbogasson, a player who I will come back to, is there any guarantee that he will be so much better than Anthony Stokes over two legs that he will be the difference between winning the tie and losing it, of course not, and in fact it is actually unlikely.

Thirdly and most importantly, the possibility that we do spend the money and do not qualify for the Champions League is one that would pose huge problems for our club. If we were to spend £12 million on players replacing Hooper, Wilson and Wanyama as well as bringing in cover for left back, and we did not make the group stage, the £24 million halves again and we are left with a increasing wage bill, no Champions League revenue and a squad of players who have had a laboured season with few high points in the league and nobody wants to buy because the biggest stage they have been seen on is the Europa League. A dramatic picture, but one that Glaswegian football fans have seen painted before"

    sorry for the long post.
