Celtic Upstage Man U For Gudjohnsen?
    26th June 2007

FC Barcelona forward, Eidur Gudjohnsen is at destination crossroads.

Eidur Gudjohnsen is faced with the high possibility of leaving FC Barcelona, but his particular destination is not certain yet, though an idea of where the Icelandic star might reside next season tends toward United Kingdom, as the Icelandic star follows the yellow-beak-road back home to Great Britain. Manchester are the first mention in association with Eidur, but increasing references to Scotland is on, where Celtic have been linked with interests in the Barca Forward. Celtic recently acquired Milan midfielder Donati and are looking to acquire a quality striker to finish good midfield play.

[IMG]Surely, Gudjohnsen will like to be in a club where he will have more playing time, and the Iceland international is not gauranteed a starting place or regular appearance in Man U jersey if he should move to Old Trafford. Manchester already have an array of stars, but with the English Premiership Champions reportedly putting striker Alan Smith in the market, Gudjohnsen may have a better chance to feature more regularly than he would have in Smith's presence. Another factor in Eidur's favour is the injury on another Man U striker, Luis Saha. All these sudden fortune however do not lock down a place for the Barca striker, as The Old Trafford Manager, Alex Fergusson is eyeing some other top notch strikers, even though Gudjohnsen is naturally liked by Sir Alex.

This effectively opens the door for Scottish Club, Celtic to come into the Gudjohnsen chase, without serious threat of having to compete with the financial and internationally viable image of Manchester United.
Should Eidur decide not to head up North of the Kingdom to Scotland, he may well settle for other English Premiership Clubs like Westham, Portsmouth or Newcastle, who will be very happy to have him.
Gudjohnsen however may prefer to remain with the bigger names like Manchester United, having had a taste of super stardom with Chelsea FC and Barcelona.

Anybody good enough to wear No. 7
He will go to Man U, or an English premiership side who have European football.

Too much money for us to go in with an offer I'm sure!!
We need to eject some flotsam before we can bring in other players for anything over £2mill.
e.g. Rigerts for £300k excellent & affordable signing.
We can't afford to sign more £3+ mill signings!!
Getting £1million for Beattie is going to be a start, but we've spent nearly £8million so do the maths.
gudjhonsen is way to expensive for us, we can't get carried away here!!
    Look at Leeds!

Would be the dream partner for VOH, but like many others, I don't see it happening.

Eidur Gudjohnsen may slip through Celtic's fingers unless an urgent move is made.

Celtic's United Kingdom colleagues, Newcastle FC of England have emerged from the back door as favourites, with a sudden reported trip to Barcelona by the Newcastle Manager himself, Sam Allardyce, who has flown in to convince Barcelona to release Eidur to the English Premiership side. In order to ensure Gudjohnsen is secured, Newcastle is offering to buy Barca's Brazilian midfielder, Edmilson, even though Edmilson is injured and recently underwent surgery by the Barcelona surgical team.
[IMG]Newcastle will have to offer something within the vicinty of 10.5 Million Euros for FC Barcelona to accept Gudjohnsen's exit, and Celtic must be prepared to match or to exceed this for the Icelandic star to head northwards toward Scotland. Edmilson may go for around 7 Million Euros, but is not linked to Celtic.
Gudjohnsen has been linked to various English Premiership clubs, most notable of which is Manchester United, and also West Ham along with Portsmouth. The Premiership clubs all wanted Eidur's power play.

However, inspite of the host of English clubs surrounding Gudjohnsen, Celtic looked like a more attractive club for Eidur, who would have looked good striking for the emerging strong midfield of Celtic. Only few days back, the Scottish giants were more favoured than front runners, Man U to land Gudjohnsen. However, with the latest fast move by the Magpies, Newcastle seem to have powered themselves into pole position to sign the Icelandic star who has already played in the English Premiership before with Bolton and Chelsea FC before coming to Camp Nou to strike for FC Barcelona.
Celtic must respond to the Newcastle offer for Eidur Gudjohnsen.

Premiership would probably appeal to him more, yet its not as if he is trying to gain a move to a higher divisiona s he has already done that before , so with champions league football on hte cards you never know ?
