I was brought up watching the mighty Hoops from a very early age, so yeah, I'd say family influence.

Same for me. My dad is a celtic fan, my uncle is a celtic fan, my grandad was a celtic fan, and no doubt his dad was a celtic fan. So it was never in doubt who I would support. Lucky for me my mums side couldnt really care about football.

Back when Italy won the World Cup I had the chance on a school trip to watch France/Brazil in Paris and then watch Italy win it all while in Italy. Being a part of both of those scenes was amazing and it hooked me to soccer.

Living in the US most people I know watch EPL leagues but I didn't have a real reason to pick any one team, I usually just watched on the side. I root for the USMNT but they don't play often enough and I watch the Union in MLS but they've been bad as of late.

So I looked for a team last year that I liked. I could relate to Celtic's fanbase and the passion and I enjoyed watching the bhoys play Rangers. Sadly that ended about the time I picked the team up.

I'll admit that the endless *-kicking gets a little old. I appreciate it, but I enjoyed watching the guys go up against top clubs during the Euro run a lot more. I'm not going anywhere as a fan, and I'm sure this won't be take too well, but I look forward to Rangers being back on the slate.

That aside, it has been a lot of fun, and Im glad to be a part of it!

Celtic had a dvd out in the recent past entitled "A history of Celtic" (or close to that sorry) watch it start to finish, you then get a real sense of what it is to be a Celtic fan. Yes Rangers were a huge part of that once upon a time but if you study our history closely then you will discover that rangers actually are only a tiny part of that history. While it was great, it was not something that defined us, what does however is the roots, the meaning, the cause and the future goals.

Them dying can only spur us on to continue the good work we do with-in the Scottish community and forever extend that worldwide, which as a club we always seek to do. :50:

    Welcome aboard mate. :shamrock:

EDIT: Note, i left out alot there, don't want to spoil the dvd! Can only say.. "more than a club"

All of my family are Celtic fans. I distinctly remember thinking "how can anyone support any other club?" as a kid. I just could not see past Celtic at all. The pride I felt because I was a Celtic fan was unreal, and it was obvious that my friends who supported English teams felt nowhere near as much for their clubs. I saw Celtic as the force for good in football, and I made sure that if there was an opportunity to let others know my team, I did.

    Hail, hail CelticLion12.

Love seeing fellow Americans discovering the Hoops because it's not that easy to do in the US (out with some sorta family link), but for the lucky ones that arrive here, it's incredibly rewarding! So consider yourself blessed. I've been a sports addict for my 29 years, grew up a big basketball fan, New York Yankees season ticket holder for a few years, diehard New York Jets fan, but nothing compares to supporting Celtic.

I don't have a close friend or family member that follows Celtic week in, week out. Basically no one to talk Celtic with day to day. You'd think a person's passion might wane in that environment, but it never does.

    As for me, why Celtic?

My dad (Irish-born) and his love of Irish music eventually rubbed off on me, that sparked my interest in Irish history, and when I started reading about the Irish diaspora I discovered Celtic's story. It captured my imagination like any Celt. From that point, I was like, I've got to see them play!

I was in Ireland on summer vacation, 2005. My uncle didnt have Sky. I asked to be driven to a pub so I could at long last see a game. I watched us try to do the improbable and overturn the infamous 5-0 defeat at Artmedia Bratislava which I'd read about in the paper. Of course, 4 goals later we came up just short. It was a rollercoaster of emotions on day one, and ever since! :ynwacelti

My folks are Celtic fans as are my entire family bar four cousins. Technically non Scot (not a ml of Scottish blood but consider myself Scottish) as was born in Ireland to Irish Catholic (zzz) parents, we came from a pretty Celtic area but Liverpool were the no 1 team and Celtic no 2. My family and a few others it was Celtic first. Only recently have i started liking Man U. More to do with the lesser evil.

But aye. Family is why i support Celtic. My uncles and dad gave us weans no choice in the matter. In fact, the only uncle that never 'forced' football on their kids ended up with two hun sons. One doesn't give a * and the other lives in Oz and isn't one of those horrible ones. I'll let my weans decide if they like football or not. They'll not be supporting the rangers though that's for sure.

Thanks for the advice. Certainly the Rangers weren't the only reason I watched, and I do watch as many games as I can with the online stream subscription despite the slightly odd time change.

I'll have to grab the DVD, always like being "all-in" with a team and history is key to doing that. Youtube has helped that quite a lot actually.

I didn't say it wasn't easy to follow the Hoops in the US these days (if you really want to), I said it's not easy TO DISCOVER Celtic. EPL gets 85% of the coverage, far more widespread distribution. The odds of a new or casual soccer fan in this country deciding to follow Celtic are slim for that reason. The Champions League obviously makes a major difference, but CelticLion said he started following Celtic around 2010, when we were not involved.

Even when we are involved in the Champions League, that's a half dozen (hopefully more) or so games. The channel that picked up SPL for the first time this year (and who knows how much longer they'll have it) is a premium channel missing from a lot of satellite packages, and it showed 1 live game a week, maybe Celtic once a month. I've heard Tims say they signed up specially this year, but will not bother renewing due to the lack of coverage. You can take my word for it on Celtic's exposure relative to other clubs in the US market. If there's one thing I have a decent handle on, it's this.

Again, we're talking about potential, unaffiliated soccer fans in the US, who are looking for a club to support, landing on Celtic. I wish it were different, and long may it be so with strong performances going forward in Europe, but to date the odds haven't been great.
