Just doesn't sit right with me. It is a bit backwards/barbaric. No one has the right to take a human life. Not even the state.

Doesnt sit with me, what happens if he is given death then proven innocent? Does the guy thatkilled him then go up for the death penalty as he has killed an innocent?

Imagine having that job though. Pushing the button to kill folk. I know I wouldn't sleep at night.

Why not give the choice to 12 of the victims closest family
    or friends?

Or does that count as revenge?

Surely that would be a biased vote? What happens if the defendant pleads not-guilty but is found guilty, the family members choose death penalty then he is found out to be not guilty?

Hope not to offend anyone, but look at the list of countries that still practice some form of capital punishment. Not too impressive a list from a human rights perspective (of course, there are a few Western democracies in there including the U.S.) Intellectual free societies do not execute people for a number of reasons. The main reason I do not support it here in the States is because of its corrupt nature. The fact that we could possibly execute an innocent person is reason enough for me to reject it. If you are an inner city nobody with * poor legal representation, you will fry for minimal evidence while the O.J. Simpsons get away with murder…

I know you said you did not mean to offend anyone, but I need to pick up on a comment you made.

Impressive list from the human rights perspective.

    • Afghanistan
    • Bahamas
    • Belarus
    • Botswana
    • China (PRC)
    • Cuba
    • Egypt
    • Guatemala
    • India
    • Indonesia
    • Iran
    • Iraq
    • Israel
    • Japan
    • Lebanon
    • Malaysia
    • North Korea
    • Pakistan
    • Russia
    • Saudi Arabia
    • Singapore
    • Somalia
    • South Korea
    • Suriname
    • Syria
    • Taiwan (ROC)
    • Tajikistan
    • Tonga
    • United Arab Emirates
    • United States
    • Vietnam
    • Yemen

This is the list that still openly practice the death penalty. Obviously there is some third world nations that are exempt from the list as they do not publish.

Some of the countries in this list are considered to have an excellent law system.

Also some of the countries in this list have some of the highest standards of living on planet earth.

Lets not forget, one of the main countries that constantly cries about human rights (USA) is still one of the main executors going back through history.

The rules are there, if you break them, you know the punishment.

So are you OK with Iran executing minors as they do on a regular basis? What about the long list of public executions carried out in Somalia, Saudi Arabia, North Korea, and Iran for the likes of adultery and religious blasphemy or for people with mental illness? There may be some countries in that list with a 'high' standard of living but many more are a far cry from it. I would say that the list is deceptive as a small fraction of these counties execute the most people worldwide: China, Iran, North Korea, Yemen, and the U.S. Many other countries on this list have not executed a person in years. The USA is the only G8 nation that still has the death penalty while Belarus is all that is left in Europe with the practice...

Some of these countries may have the death penalty on their statute books but need not necessarily "openly practice" it. Cuba for instance has commuted all death sentences and hasn't killed anyone under their laws for over 10 years.
