No way anybody would pay that kinda money for for a 31 year old in the SPL. He will stay with us, he just needs to get his finger out of his * and start performing again.

Thought he put in a real shift against St Johnstone as evidenced by his closing down for the first goal. Problem is that I just cannot see a long term place for him in the team within Ronny's preferred system. Closing down etc is not his game (even if he did do his best at it) and in every game so far including this one he seems to be isolated and frustrated. I think it's inevitable that he is going to gradually drift out the starting 11 under Ronny which is a shame as he obviously has bags of ability & I do rate him. It's clear to me that the front line if not the whole team are going to need to get about the park and that's not really one of his assets.

Can't see how he fits into this system at all. If it's 433 then you have:

    Biton
    Brown Johansen

    If it's 4231

    Brown Johansen
    Forrest McGregor Tonev

Don't think Ronny will drop McGregor, and neither he should. He's been far better than Commons this season.

He's really struggling with this system, his first touch is shocking at times.

32 goals though, it feels weird to say it might not fit.

Definitely, that's what I'm struggling with and maybe the management to? Don't want to leave him out as he was so prolific but then again it's not really working. Hope he doesn't just drift out the team and disappear he's too good for that IMO.

The thing is though, taking him out will benefit the team as a whole - hopefully.

Aye it's great he scored 32 goals but those goals might come from somewhere else if we drop him for someone who suits the system.

    *, punt him.

In all seriousness though, I don't know if he's still just rusty after the summer break, but he hasn't as looked as sharp or as willing to go for goal since we started pre-season. Hopefully it's just a case of him getting up to speed with things again.

Then again, he produces those moments of brilliance that turn a match, like that lovely reverse pass for Stokes tonight.

Although we looked a better unit when those two went off we can't forget that contribution, that's what they are capable of.

Commons is built like a tank so it will take him quite a few games to get up to speed, but when he does, and if Ronny starts playing him tucked in behind Griffiths and Stokes ( who can be his legs ), we will see the deadly 30 goal a year Commons again, and don't forget he is brilliant at penalties too. We can't and we won't leave that kind of player out of the team.

I agree we can't afford to leave guaranteed goals on the side lines but I worry that Deila is too stubborn to change from this pish system he is forcing on us.

If he is determined for change, then do it over time and make sure there is players capable of playing his way. There is no way we should be playing Maribor the way we have been set up since Ronny got the job, because we'll get hammered.

A great manager doesn't only play one way, he should adapt.

Rotten performance from commons tonight. Touch of a rapist, couldn't complete a pass, head in the clouds. Hopefully he's still warming up, him and johansson were terrible tonight.

I'd maybe consider playing him deeper in a midfield 3.

This isnt something new with Commons, his would lose the ball this often last season but because he was scoring goals no one would notice or care, now with the other teams packing the middle of the park Commons is struggling with this even more and im afraid hes not just the right man for us atm. Sell.

I actually agree with the part about last season. There was a lot of games last season where I remember thinking he should have been subbed, then he would end up scoring :smiley-laughing002:.

The moves last night, all too often broken down when the ball was played into the feet of both he and Stokes.

To be fair to Commons he did get us a goal last night, Stokes did score it but anyone in our team would have if they had been set up the way Commons set Stokes up.

Unfortunately Commons and Stokes just do not work well in the kind of team that Ronny is trying to build. He wants fluid great passing and good movement. They have the movement but play too often breaks down with them and their passing can be woeful. When they were both subbed off and replaced with players who can link well and keep the fluidity going, we were instantly a better team and scored another 2.

Not sure anyone would have scored Stokes still had to round the keeper, plus once they were subbed St Johnstone were a man down so obvious we would look better.

Absolutely brilliant today as well, was offered a bit more freedom and not used as the focal point in attack, so he had room to work with. Some of the play between him and Stokes was almost telepathic at times, was great to watch.

Do you think he will start the second leg or will Ronny stick with the team that done well tonight?
