I hate it when people tell you to play in something and it's just for fun. It's obviously to win it :84:

in my humble opinion, the old european cup was harder because football was a lot more physical back then and because it was only the champions of each nation who got into it rather than england's, spain's and italy's 4th placed teams

The football may have been more physical but the inclusion of the 2nd,3rd and 4th place teams from the big leagues has made it much much more competitive. The standard of teams is far higher.

Just say the Champions of Sweden or Denmark or even Scotland went straight in instead of Chelsea or Real Madrid or Roma. The teams finishing 2nd or 3rd in the top leagues are better teams than the champions of smaller nations.

I don't agree with it because its all designed to benefit the g14 clubs but it has made it the ultimate club trophy.

2 years ago EUFA gave a trophy to the 21 teams who had been crowned champions of europe, Celtic were one of the 21. Reaching the last 16 of the champions league is nothing compared to 1 win, 2 semi-finals, 4 quarter finals.

I have got to agree, same trophy just different name as the old European Cup looks exactly the same as the Champions League trophy.

Good point there. Teams count the amount of times they have won it before and after the Champions League, so to me that says it's the same.

    Champions League winners 1967...Glasgow Celtic.

It does not matter what way you slice it we have 1 Champions League title to our name. The format and name was different but it was the same competition. Just like we just won our 41st League title. We count all 41 as they all were the same competition just under different names and formats over the years.

Im not taking anything away from the Lisbon Lions so dont anyone start cos even though we played less games then we had a team ,as im sure you all know , that came from a 30 mile radius of Parkhead which i think is a BIGGER achievement Im just saying its harder nowadays due to both format and no of games.:31:

PS If im wrong about the exact number of games we played in 1967 then feel free to pull me up but im pretty sure it was 9 games:celt_2:

Are you sure? There is 6 games in the group stages then 2 legs in the last 16 then 2 legs in the quarters then 2 legs in the semis then the final itself and i make that 13 games pal (excluding qualification matches) Am i right or am i right?:34:

Which stupid person started this thread? Champions of Europe is champions of Europe, end of.

The CL is ridiculous when you have a situation like a couple of years back when England had 5 teams in it. The current setup only benefits the big leagues who have more TV money and 4 teams in it.

You could be done und3er the trade descriptions act by calling it the champions league when the league stage only has 6 or so genuine national champions.

All i know is that for four or so years Celtic were the best team in the world.

Bring back the real European cup.
