Modern day would have to be Henrik...
We've had 18 managers since 1897 - how would you rank them?
Who are your top ten and why - or bottom five and why?

Should it go on trophy count? Dr Jo won nowt but brought us Lubo...
Willie Maley won more than anyone...

How would you rank them and why?

Here they are with their length of service and total trophy count...

Wow up until the 90s we barely had many managers!

It wasn't really the norm to sack managers until the past 20 years.

    Top 5.

Stein - Undoubtedly first. 25 trophies in 13 years, plus the European Cup.
    Maley - Pretty obviously second.
Strachan - Objectively, I think his achievements were greater than O'Neil. A less expensive team but he won 3-in-a-row and reached the Last 16 twice.
O'Neil - Did an amazing job and it was a great time to be a Celtic fan but he could have done better with the funds available to him.
Lennon - I think by the end of his reign he'll be our 3rd greatest manager. Considering how much he's done in the last 3 years - taking over probably the worst team in our history and re-building it into possibly one of our best, on a shoe-string budget, I think he definitely deserves a huge amount of credit.

i would have to say the Jock Stein ERA would have been the hardest years, for the Celtic football club as he is the only manager that came out with a few quotes about the unjust that Celtic had to endure, it was at times that jobs for the boys where rife, not saying Maley would have found it any easier, I just think it was known then about the Rangers signing policy, and the fact they had them at all makes me believe, they hated the site of us, and us winning the big eared cup
made it even harder on us, to get away with a fair COMPETITION with regards how the wee red book was formulated, that we had the most of the hardest games away in the winter months, and also how the cup games where drawn from the black bag.

It depends which criteria you think managers should be judged by. In terms of titles and trophies, Maley, Stein, O'Neill and Strachan (in that order) obviously stand out.

It's fair to say that times have changed so much that Maley could not really be compared to Lennon, and vice versa. Maley's job was more demanding in some respects and Lennon's is equally more demanding than Maley's in others.

But to add to the criteria being used I'll throw in win, draw and loss statistics in as well:

1 Stein changed Celtic from a big club in Scotland to a major world club
2 McNeill should never have been allowed to leave first time and centenary double
3 Strachan turned round an ageing squad still won titles
    4 O'Neill Seville
5 Jansen the pressure he was under to stop 10 in a row

Tommy Burns deserves to be mentioned just for the style of football

Maley,McStay and McGrory were before my time but trophy count compared with years in job does not make them look like top class managers.

Neil Lennon will make it onto the list before he is finished probably behind Stein

Maley has to be one of our greatest managers. It's Maley who established us as one of the biggest clubs in the world. His success as a manager is key to everything that follows.

Modern day would have to be Henrik...
Well, I think Stein first - he became manager more or less as I took my first breath.
I'm not too sure about Maley - he didn't train the team, he didn't talk to them, he didn't do anything it seems team-wise...Cesar has to be up there - Wim too - one year, one league championship, but what a championship to win, and for bringing Henrik to the club. TB for his footballing style, WGS for doing what he did in the harsh financial climate we found ourselves in - MON for spanking the huns arses good and proper and letting them know that there was a new sheriff in town...Here's hoping Lennie can join them.

Our two English boys - Mowbray and Barnes... pile of fkn *. McGrory - patsy for a * board - Complete Celtic legend but no manager. Macari... less said about that the better...

In my lifetime we've only had Martin O'Neill, Gordon Strachan, Tony Mowbray and Neil Lennon that I can remember. I would rank them:

    Martin O'Neill
    Neil Lennon
    Gordon Strachan

    Tony Mowbray

But Maley ensured that Celtic grew out to be a very professional (and succesful as a result) club. Without him we might have ended up as Queen's Park.

Maley and Stein share first place for me.

To be fair it was a completely different age.

Oh aye - there is no doubt that he gave 50+ years of his life to Celtic and made them what they are - to be honest I got caught up in my own preamble about trophy count and started second-guessing myself!

If Maley had not been successful we could ended up like Hibs, or even the level of Partick Thistle, he set the standard that future managers could be compared to.

We also established ourselves as the second most successful side in Scotland beyond doubt, and taking into account we may have been cheated out of championships, with favoritism for rangers, we probably were just as good. if not better than rangers in his era.

There has been some questioning of Willie Maley in this thread and his significance. Seriously? The guy's influence and lasting legacy on this club cannot be under appreciated. Yes, it was a completely different age, but it was more than that. Putting aside his contribution as a footballer, he then spent over 40 years as the manager of the club. 40 years! That is a lifetime - people would have been born, raised, grown to adulthood, had families of their own and died in that time span.

The one thing that people are not considering is context. When comparing MO'N & WGS, many will instantly look at the funds that the respective manager had at their disposal, and this is only over a period of about 8 years. Now multiply that time span 5 times longer to contemplate the massive changes throughout Maley's career.

Time never stands still. You may look at old black and white photos and some might tend to get lost in the timelessness of the images, but not realize that there were completely different factors at play throughout this age.

In the first 2 decades at the helm Celtic enjoyed an unparallelled period of dominance in the game that would go unmatched until Stein in the the early 70's. Let's not forget that this included losing quite a few players, who went off to fight in WWI - some never to return.

The second half of his tenure as the boss was not quite so glorious, but the challenges and conditions changed significantly over these years. The uber-bigot Bill Struth implemented and consolidated his sectarian ideals over at Ipox, which reflected the hardening attitudes towards the Irish community in Glasgow in the aftermath of the Easter Uprising and Irish Independence. Celtic Park was redeveloped and new stands built, meaning Celtic lost alot of their best players in order to finance these, and on the back of that the Great Depression saw the Board become increasingly tight fisted throughout the remainder of his tenure, with fewer resources allowed in order to scale back the progress that was underway esewhere. Even still Maley was able to reconstruct the team so many times over, to the point that they were on the upswing once again in the closing stages of Maley's career.
