Many of our mid-2000s signings and players on loan were forgettable. I doubt I could establish a starting eleven from them but take for example Aliadiere, Killen, Du Wei, Henchoz, Mo Camara and Virgo.

I well remember plenty of bhoys who put Aliadiere as the name on the back of their shirts thinking he would be a club legend. :52:

I can't believe I've just seen Balde mentioned in this thread. The man was a pivotal part of the team that embarked on the Road to Seville and also played in the final itself, even though he was sent off. * madness that he would even be mentioned in a "worst Celtic starting 11 in recent years" thread.

I'll tell you something for nothing; Balde is a better centre back than any of the current centre backs we have at the club right now (obviously excluding Ambrose, as I've never seen him play and therefore cannot judge yet).

I'm not saying that the likes of Rogne don't have the potential to become better, as he is still relatively young in his career, but Balde is definitely better than K.Wilson and Mulgrew performs better as a left back than a centre back.

This, with bells on. Balde was an early to mid-2000s legend. People have short memories, it sadly seems.

    Since 2005:

    Mark Brown
Paul Caddis, Josh Thompson, Adam Virgo, Lee Naylor(of 2009)
Willo Flood, Thomas Gravesen, Paul McGowan, Edson Braafeid
    Chris Killen, Pavel Brozek

    Makes me shudder.

I forgot all about that Edson Braafheid, to be quite honest. I remember hearing a lot of promising things about him when he signed for us and then in one of his first games, he handled the ball inside the area and gave Aberdeen (I think) a penalty. Never seen him again :56:

Braafheid went to TSG 1899 Hoffenheim (I hadn't heard of them either) and then ended up on loan to FC Twente. 31 appearances at those clubs since he left us and one goal.

    Great name but.

I've said it plenty of times. He's the poorest footballer I've ever seen play for the hoops.

Very good at what he did, but he may just have been the worst technical footballer we've had.

Absolutely no ball control and was unable to make any sort of a pass from A-B. Total liability and embarrassing. Heart in the mouth stuff when the keeper roles the ball out to him.

Indeed. Hard to believe that someone under the age of 25 could be playing in the English National Conference (Mansfield Town) only three years after pulling on the Hoops.

I feel a bit sorry for him to be honest.

We've had a good few defenders worse than Balde just in the time since he left the club, and that's not counting of course the 100+ years of history before Balde even knew what Celtic was.

And yet he's the worst player EVER, in 125 years to have pulled on the Hoops, despite the fact he helped us get to a European final?

I find it funny how we've seen Balde mentioned twice, yet still no mention of Stan Varga... :56:

Broadfoot helped Rangers to the same cup final.
