All games are going to be difficult for us, Benfica are used to playing CL football our group players are not and it's a big step up from Europa League football.

If Barca play like they can they will win both ties. Moscow away will be tough a lot of cash has been poured into that league since we played them last, so if they managed to finnish runner up they must be decent.

We've improved as a group but with no real pressure in the league it could be to big a step up in class for us to make a real impact.

Magic to be involved but we need our new signings to hit the ground running if we are to have a chance. I see this season CL campaign as a learning curve and the group and coaching staff will learn what's required for future adventures.

The introduction of a coach with CL experience would be a good move IMO. :shamrock:

Who the * do you think we're comparing them to? :icon_mrgreen:

Yeah you have to sell a player every window to keep your outgoings of 25m euros up. Not exactly peasants in the grand scheme of things.

I would love for Celtic to get 20-25M on a player but unlike Benfica we would never get paid those prices due to the spl imo

As far as I'm following the conversation we're comparing them to 'big clubs'

Put it this way, they couldn't afford the two players they just sold to a Russian mob and an English mob with not even a 10th of Benficas history.

I dont think its impossible for us to receive £20m for a player. If we continue to bring in unknown gems and they get to play in the champions league consistently then whos to say one of our signings produces some world class displays and gets us to the last 16 or quarter finals and really stands out, whilst being our stand out player in the league.....its possible but maybe a few years away from that just yet....

Here is an article to understand how we buy our 5-10million players, through a Benfica Stars Fund, which is independent
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/15298353
[ame="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benfica_Stars_Fund"]Benfica Stars Fund - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia[/ame]

We have a lot of third party ownership which helps us buy the players. The millions we get from selling just about gets us through interest payments and the hundreds of millions of deficit we have. We have no choice but to try our best to buy low and sell as high as possible.

Ramires is a great example, he was always going to stay with for one season only, tactic used by the Kia agent guy.

Also, not sure how the working permit works in Scotland (probs the same as England?), but we can get real cheap South Americans, something you can't exploit. This has a major disadvantage as well, last year we fielded an entire non-Portuguese team for the first time in the club's history, not something to be proud of. But this is how we survive, well, so we hear from our mighty dictator that is our president...

But yes, we have sold over €130m over the past few years, but our wage structure is lower than SPL average probably? (assumption)

Our attendances are shocking, it's not like the old days anymore, 80k+ used to be a norm, and now selling out the stadium once a season is a miracle.

This is evil, too much money ruining our football nowadays

Same with us too, from 1998-2007, we got a full stadium every week of about 59,000. 2008 it went down to about 56,000, 2009, 54,000, 2010, 52,000, 2011 50,000 and now we're about 48,000.

How much is a Benfica season ticket or League match single ticket?

For Celtic its about £550(€690) a season ticket or €36 a match.

Celtics wage budget is about £30M(€37M) a season.

I think we could take Benfica all right. Maybe 4 points from them. If we could keep Aimar quiet - man marking job for Kayal - we`ll have a real chance. That 2nd place is really up for grabs although Spartak have quite a strong attack

I find the whole third party ownership very shady. It's more of an exception than the rule, that it's allowed in some countries, like Spain or indeed Portugal. Without it, there's no way that Falcao would've ended up at Atletico for example or that Zaragoza could've signed Roberto from you, since Zaragoza as a club were more or less broke.

I guess it helps the clubs and you as a fan get to see a lot of quality in your team, but not sure if it's the healthiest option for football in general.

Basic work permit rules are the same in Scotland as in England obviously, although due to the standard of the league, I'd say it's slightly easier to get a work permit in Scotland for a player, that doesn't fulfill the set criteria. Obviously Portuguese clubs have the advantage of bringing in cheap Brazilians (language and climate obviously help).

I'm not sure your wage structure is lower, I'd imagine your top players are all earning more than top players here and I think your squads are bigger. Would be hard to tell if you compare the leagues as a whole to each other, but wages in the SPL are quite low on average.

Yeah, we have passive funds of €400M, but still our active funds are slightly higher, wich gives us space for maneuver. Thats why we always have to sell and make profit with players every single year.

Wages of all our public limited sports company. Benfica S.A.D., wich owns Benfica sports club, stadium, etc

Guys, Any news on buses going to Lisbon in November, or is it too soon to say? Would love to take in a trip to the old Nacional stadium too.

Went to Milan and Lisbon a few years ago when we had both teams in the CL, fantastic cities, even though the results were far from perfect. Got tickets for all the home games in the CL but i doubt ill get to any away games.

Just good knowing that Celtic are in this competition, it has been too long.
