I've always wondered if Rafael Scheidt was actually a diddy or if he just couldn't adapt to Scottish Football. The guy did get caps for Brazil and seems to have had a decent career in Brazilian club football.

It's hard to believe a player that was a total diddy could have done that.

He only received 3 caps for Brazil and when you consider that Brazil in the past, as overall amazing as they are/were, aren't as strong defensively. Let's be honest, if Martin O'Neill can't get the best out of him with his apparent pedigree then it must be down to him simply not being good enough. Stan Varga was hardly revered as a great player when we got him on a free from Sunderland but Martin did a great job with him. No matter the reasons, he was simply scheidt. :50:

Would it be unfair to mention Jacob Lensky in this thread? Boy thought he was some sort of Canadian messiah but instead complained about having to clean senior players boots and was quickly punted to Feyenoord where he continued to whinge about the same thing, he then "retired" at 19 becuase he was depressed only to come out of retirement at 21 to discover he was still *.

There was rumours that some players were handed a cap or two for Brazil in meaningless matches to drive up their price and make money for the Brazilian league.

Don't know how much truth there was in that though.

I don't really buy that mate. Juninho had plenty pedigree but Martin O'Neill couldn't get the best out of him either. Sometimes players just can't adapt to playing in another country, maybe this was the case with Rafael.

I don't know, I'm just thinking out loud.

Juninho was over the hill which is another argument entirely but it's interesting regarding Scheidt's failure nonetheless.

A lot of Brazilians have had token caps to win moves to Europe.

I said the same thing on the last page.

Was that ever proved? I don't remember hearing any more about it.

I seem to remember there was a story going around at the time that Nike had an input into who got picked for Brazil(presumably because of sponsorship money).

i remember when celtic came out with this litte gem.

'' like all great Brazilian player Pele, zico etc. they only use there 1st names, so our new Brazilian player will have Rafael on his shirt''

in hindsight, should have had * on the back. :56:

    £3.5 mill wasn't it.

our whole transfer budget for the season if my memory serves me right. :52:

It was actually £4.8million for Scheidt :47:. Barnes actually had the 2nd biggest summer budget - Around £12million - in our history after MON in the summer of 2000.

It was worse than mate it was £5million! And a long term contract on £25,000 a week!! An incredible waste of money. :54:

I must admit I did fear the worst when I heard his second name was Scheidt. I'd have refused to sign him on that basis alone. :56:

Yip - paid about £5m for *, £5.75 for Jerkovic and £2m for Petrov - and just over £1m for Tebily (who I believe was his first signing?)

Don't think he paid any fees for Dmitri Kharine or Ian Wright?

That's about all I can think off the top of my head who Barnes signed.

Tebily still gives me nightmares as well.

Got to give him props for signing Stan, although the fact he played him at RB is just more proof how much of a * up he was as a manager.

Imagine signing one of Scottish footballs best ever midfielders but not being clued up enough to play him there :56:
