Sitting watching Serpico just now with Al Pacino (based on a true story).

Basically a straight-laced Cop in 70's New York who blew the lid in police corruption (taking money from drug dealers etc).

Used to think he was a great, but thinking tonight he's just a wee jobsworth grass.

    Discuss.

I have to vote on the side of the righteous so to speak...canny condone any form of corruption.Polis are supposed to uphold the law and keep oor streets clear of *.Taking money fae drug dealers and pocketing it ain't no better than the dealers themselves....In my opinion Serpico wasn't wrong, maybe a bit straight laced but morally sound.

Well - i'd say they weren't any more corrupt than their superiors at the very top of the chain.

I know fine well if I was a cop on a * salary getting shot at by scumbags etc. if someone handed me an envelope with $300.......it would be right in my back pocket.

I've actually a wee theory on ol' Mr. Serpico - struggling to make Detective....everyone thinking he's a weirdo, shunning him - plus the allegations he was a gay............perhaps trying to sell everyone out to gain brownie points to get the shield?

He was totally right to expose.

When faced with police corruption on that scale, there is no moral alternative.

You simply have to whip yr * out. :50:

Not being any more corrupt than your superiors don't make it OK to go on the take...It makes it easier though.

If someone handed me an envelope wae a wad of dosh i reckon i'd head straight doon the pub but if i was a cop and the envelope was a wee nod tae turn a blind eye...i couldn't accept it but i wouldn't grass a fellow workmate in.

Re:your theory......I don't suppose we'll ever know but it sounds plausable.

Course he was right, police corruption is the lowest of the low. Brave man to take a stand.

Serpico was absolutely right to do what he did.

Phenomenal film too, one of Pacino's best - which is saying something.

He was absolutely right to "grass" on the *. We're supposed to trust the police to do the right thing and as soon as any of them start with the drugs, committing violence, and taking paybacks they become just as bad as the people we're trying to get off the streets.

More cops like Serpico I say.
