Of the Australians who support football teams which aren't A-league teams they are mostly Arsenal, Liverpool Man U or Chelsea. I have met 2 celtic fans. 1 is more of a liverpool fan so he doesn't really follow celtic much and the other is an ex pat who started a supports club in my city which Im joining this year.

My own personal experience in some of the CSC's and pubs for matches, I have come across quite a number in Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia. Outside of Asia I know there is a large support in South Africa, the States, Canada and Central America.

These are proper fans, either Scottish or been too or lived in Scotland and have adopted Celtic as one of their fav or not their fav team.

You do also get the people who like the team, but I don't consider them fans. I would say about 15-20% of our total fanbase is worldwide.

    My guess would be:

65% UK (with the very most from Scotland)
    15% Ireland
    20% rest of the World

It's hardest for me to compare Celtic support in Ireland and Scotland.

As for example, there is a solid support for Celtic in Poland. We have our own Polish Celtic internet chat/forum http://polishbhoys.xaa.pl/ Polish websites like celticpoland.com and not only online but also in 'real' life I know some Celtic supporters here.

    PS
I don't know how exactly Google Trends work, but this may be a bit helpful tool in this thread:
    http://www.google.com/trends/?q=celtic&ctab=0&geo=all&date=all

Unfortunately, the number of searches for Celtic is getting lower in recent years, with the most from Ireland, UK, Canada, Australia, US, Netherlands, Poland...
As for languages English of course is first with Polish in the second and Dutch third.

^ This may be influenced by search of other clubs with Celtic in it's name (like Boston Celtic), but here are the results for "Celtic Glasgow":
    http://www.google.com/trends/?q=celtic+glasgow&ctab=0&geo=all&date=all&sort=0
Ireland again in front, with UK second and Poland third just behind these two. Polish language in the first place - I guess there must be something wrong as English should be first :87:

    65% - UK

    15% - Ireland

    25%- Rest of the World

the number of supporters in Sweden/scandanavia and the US alone could give them both a percentage of our support

In 2003, the estimated fan base was 9 million - of which, 1 million was North America alone. They have 60 CSCs there.

There is also a massive fan base in Oz.

Ideally, we would be able to track down the referenced copy of Capita Consulting in conjunction with Cranfield Institute to find out the breakdown for the rest of the world.

This was discussed on this site a few years ago. Hammer and Paul are still going strong... :). Pre-dated me by a few months, however.

It's pretty much an impossible question to answer as we have no idea what our worldwide fanbase actually is. When the estimated 9 million fans figure was touted a few years back I thought it was a bit of a wild guess and I've still no idea on what that figure was based on, so to break it down:

The number of members of CSC's worldwide? It's pretty obvious they would include this but the number wouldn't be anywhere near enough to hit 9 million including our Scottish, Irish, Welsh and English fans.

An estimated number of ex-pat Celtic fans around the world and by extension their families? Possibly, but how would they know the actual number apart from pure guesswork?

Taking into account the number of Scottish and Irish communities in countries like the US and Australia? Again, possibly, but everyone within those communities won't be Celtic fans so again it's a wild guess at best.

Shirt sales? Not likely, we don't sell millions of shirts worldwide each year, in fact clubs like Man Utd and Barca dont even hit the 2 million mark and we're nowhere near them in shirt sales Here's a couple of links and the article states "A “big” club like Ajax in a “small” league like the Dutch league might expect to sell 100,000 shirts and probably fewer in most seasons. Celtic (a Nike club) are believed to be the biggest sellers among Scotland’s clubs, with “good year” sales at the lower end of the top 10, ie: several hundred thousand per year, many of them overseas in North America, Canada and Australia."

    http://www.sportingintelligence.com...erpool-chase-as-england’s-second-best-310805/

So forget shirt sales as they tell us nothing really.

There's just no way to know, we could have 2 million fans outside the UK and Ireland or we could have 10 million which would make drastic differences in the percentage figures.

Agreed there is no way to know - however, the most definitive calculation there HAS been would appear to be as per the 9 million....and that was 9 years ago as well.

In truth, I reckon the number of worldwide "fans" would startle some, and also vastly diminish the percentages of those based in Scotland and Eire.

roughly guessing id say rest of the world is about 40% and uk and ireland make up 60%, we have a great fanbase when you consider the league and small country we are in, if we were in the epl which gets the holy * marketed out of it then we would be overtaking man u and barca imo

    Would be interesting to know.

I watched the Celtic V Motherwell game in August or September last year in Felans? in Belfast and there was id guess around 150 people. It was upstairs and upstairs was solely opened for the Celtic game to be shown on big screens. Made me think how many other clubs could have 150+ fans in the one place in a different country supporting a team from another country. Dont think there'd be that many, could probably count them on one hand and that was only Celtic V Motherwell, * knows how much turn up when we're playing the huns or in the CL.

Indeed. Not to mention that we are the ONLY club in Scotland to truly have any kind of global appeal.

In the words of ex-deadco director Hugh Adam:

"Rangers’ so-called global appeal is a myth," he said. "When I was there, we did an exercise which involved asking 50,000 fans on the database to recommend a friend or a relative abroad."

A big response was expected - some were even talking about getting 100,000 names - because everybody in Scotland seems to know somebody abroad.

We got back 2,800 names and three-quarters of them didn’t know they had been nominated. It’s no surprise that Celtic are officially the best-supported football club in North America, with more official clubs than anybody else. The difference is the Irish connection."

Many Irish people may support Manchester United, Liverpool or whoever, but they all - every one of them - have an affection for Celtic. And, of course, Celtic also have a great Scottish following.

The difference is that, while the Irish all have an allegiance to Parkhead, there are millions of Scots who not only don’t support Rangers, but actively dislike them.

Despite the claims of international appeal, Rangers are, essentially, a West of Scotland club. They talk of supporters’ buses leaving from all parts of Scotland, but if you look closely, you’ll see there aren’t many from each area and they are not all full."

Wankchester Ushited claim to have a lot of fans out in Asia – most of whom probably haven’t a clue. That’s the nature of football these days. It’s largely superficial.

There is a difference between a fan – as in some plastic cheerleader – and a genuine supporter.

In terms of genuine support there are very few clubs who can top Celtic.

Overall more people support Celtic than Wankchester.
