Balde and Valgaeren were a couple of really bad footballers imo. I picked McManus for his defending but he's in the same boat.

For anybody to say the likes of Kayal should be picked over Paul Lambert is madness.

complete myth about balde being a bad footballer. he was actually not too bad on the ball , he could dribble out of defence and could usually spot a pass, via a long ball ( bit like caldwell ). yes , he was a bomb scare at times , but that seems to come with the territory of being a celtic centre half ( havent seen anything in the decade since balde to suggest otherwise)

I would say they were far far better than McManus at defending and playing.

Our best football playing centre-backs in order of the last 10 years id say were

    1. Mulgrew
    2. Mjallby
    3. Varga
    4. Caldwell
    5. Balde

Dont know, although Bobo could carry the ball well, he was prone to heading and punting anywhere too much. Varga was really calm on the ball and his long passing was marvelous, he was also great at chesting the ball down and playing rather than heading away. Caldwell was calm on the ball too and could pass from the back but was dodgy at times.

Mulgrew is pretty much the complete footballing defender, Mjallby was similar although slightly less than Mulgrew.

Ditto, but put Hartson in for Sutton.

He doesnt defend for Ireland either.. and gives away a lot of frees....

He does chase back a lot more than people give him credit for....but he does loose possession a lot too...which without someone covering behind him would cause lots of problems

and a lot of his chasing results in frees..or him being just brushed aside ...
he doesnt get in good defensive positions...or win a lot of possesion from the opposition etc..

Balde is streets ahead of the majority of CB's we've had since.

Tell you something he wouldn't have allowed us to be bullied like we were by McCulloch the other week.

Are you genuinely trying to say that Charlie Mulgrew, after 1 good season, is a better centre-half than those guys? Those guys who won 3 titles, many domestic trophies and took us to a European final? The same guys who set records for least goals conceded against far better players? The same guys who won a record number of SPL games in succession? The same guys who were part of a team that were unbeaten at home in 70-odd games? The same guys who made Celtic Park a fortress against the best teams in Europe? Compared to Mulgrew who struggled to contain the likes of FC Sion and Braga?

To suggest that Caldwell and Mulgrew are better than Balde is just utter, utter madness. Mulgrew/Caldwell wouldn't have got anywhere near our defence for O'Neill - in fact, Mulgrew didn't...

he clearly said "best football playing centre backs " . ie best with the ball at their feet playing out of defence ...rather than just defending , holding a line , positional sense , tackling and heading ( important elements of being a good centre back )...he isnt saying mulgrew is a better centre back just better at playing from the back . and he is , by an absolute mile.

Ah well that's ok then. I'd rather have Mulgrew to face up against top European teams than Mjallby because he will be able to pass it 20 yards, something Balde and Mjallby were incapable of:56:

Can't believe that people on here would take Mulgrew ahead of Mjallby and Balde, the most solid defence we've had in years.

We would be lucky if our current players would have a place on the bench for the seville team. Still love our players and think they have a great future ahead of them.

i clearly stated mulgrew isnt a better central defender , i just backed up the guys point that mulgrew was the best at playing out from the back . i am saying he has that quality in his game more than the others mentioned . read back the posts carefully , it was a comparison of the different qualities these players have .

Mulgrew is a better technical player than balde and mjallby , although balde and mjallby were all round better defenders. thats the point i made , and you have went off one , making out as if i said balde and johan were incapable of passing .

you have misunderstood the point being made .

Nice to see Varga in someones team :50: loved the big man. Was amazing in the air and his long crossfield balls to Thompson/Hartson/Sutton created many a goal.

Would be brilliant if we could find another defender like him on a bosman, an old experienced defender who could defend, scored for fun and could play on the deck.
