Does that go for every profession or just footballers?

Sorry but I cant get my head around how in your opinion being on Twitter is unprofessional?

As long as the Twitter account is being used in a personal manner and is not being used to publish private and sensitive inside information about Celtic and it is clear the view's aired are those of the player and not the club I don't see the issue. But that goes for every profession, footballer or otherwise. So why should footballers be different?

Footballers are not known for being the sharpest knives in the drawer, and as has been proven in the past, they don't really understand the difference between personal/private and confidential information. It takes very little encouragement for them to step out of line.

At the end of the day they are no different to anyone else. Just because they kick a ball for 90 minutes the can't have a social life?

I understand why people worry about footballers doing twitter but
I personally think and voted for the option "Footballers Should be allowed to use the internet freely like everyone else"...I think maybe it could be one easy way for them to release their stress by comunicating with their friends and fans....

Don't have a problem with footballers using Twitter/facebook or any social networking sites.
But these guys have to remember that they are in the public eye most of the time, even before Twitter so now they are even more in the spotlight and really have to be careful what they air in public. They can't really complain when the club fines them for saying stupid things about refs, team mates, other players or their clubs.
They are just normal people, but when in certain professions you have to be really careful what you do and say. It is after all only a short career (which we are constantly reminded about), so to watch what you say for a few years and behave in accordance to your profession it really shouldn't be too bad. Once you've finished playing Tweet away and slag every ref, club, player and club you please.

They should be allowed to use the internet freely, but they also should be responsible and be careful with what they post on their twitter/facebook accounts.

of course they should, I dont know what people would think that just because they play football they have to give up their right to free speech, that being said they should self moderate what they put on their, I know people who have been fired for calling their bossed * on facebook and its one of the reason I have 2 facebook accounts, 1 for close friends and family and the other for part time acquaintances

This. It gives a new connection between players and supporters, gives the supporters a chance to see the players personalities.

Any player or manager using it though needs to do so with a lot of common sense.

I think the question should be are footballers intelligent enough to use social networks(kyle Bartley)? I would suggest the majority might not be. Personally if I managed a club I would ban my players from using it, tough *. Clubs can impose curfews so I cant see why social networks cannot be banned from use.

I don't see anything wrong with it

It's a good way to communicate with fans and air your opinion (within reason)

If I were a manager/chairman I would ban all my players from social media. It is self indulgent nonsense and absolutely no good can come of it.

If players want to publish their thoughts then it should be through official club channels, in the same way that people are typically asked to release their own statements relating to their company through that company and not over the internet. And at least working professionals are intelligent enough not to post things that would bring themselves or their club into disrepute, unlike a lot of footballers. Of course it is up to each clubs own policy but if it were me I would ban the lot!

I think they should be allowed to use it like anyone else. If used properly I think it's a good tool which gives fans insight into them as people as well as footballers. Fans like going on and looking at the chat, seeing pics etc.

Having said that, I can see why it would * managers off. Footballers are renound for having massive egos whilst at the same time not exactly being the sharpest tools in the shed. These two things combined with their popularity has the potential to cause all sorts of trouble and of course the newspapers will lap it up. Mixing it in with all the spin that the papers report, poor relationships within whatever club and club rivalries just makes it worse.

Banning IMO really should to be taken on a case-by-case basis. Use it, but make an * of yourself, the club or anyone else and you can get the * off it.
