Georgios Samaras

Shame everyone likes to forget them. So they can support their own agenda against him.

Not at all - January the 2nd will never be forgotten by me, one of my best days supporting Celtic, of course Samaras played a major part that day.

 

He was crucial in the 3-0 game as well. He had a lot of good games last season.

 

The bottom line for me is that he simply is not good enough.As for having a dry spell i agree that this can happen for any striker, but a forward playing for Celtic against the total mediocraty that are SPL defences his record is shocking.Even taking in to account he has many substitute apperances it just doesnt cut it.It's evident that lennon likes him so i thnk we won't be finished debating his worth to the team any time soon.

he aint a bad player but he is inconsitent

i wish he sometimes he would just stick to doing the simple stuff like lay the ball off and get into the box to get on the end of something, * bbj made a career out of it and was hugely succesful, why cant he just do that, then when he has mastered it !!! then add the other stuff to his game

i wonder if he's got lost and doesnt know what his position on the football park is anymore

samaras if your listening, "your a centre forward, lay the ball off and get into the box and score goals, that's your job, dont deviate!"

the hurley burly speed of the scottish game doesnt seem to suit him

imo samaras and celtic are now a toxic mix and it be best for both parties if he moves on, but good luck to the big man

im surprised a championship club hasn't came in for him quite franky

 

He'd do much better if Celtic didn't play against teams sitting so deep every week. He should do well in europe if we qualify and there are teams in our group that will have a go at us, but Sion defended very deep similarly to SPL teams. He showed in the 2-0 game at Ibrox he can hurt teams if given space.

 

I'd support a three-legged hobbyhorse if it was wearing a Celtic shirt, but Sammy is inconsistant and WILL NOT become a consistant performer for us. We should try and get a couple of mill for him.

i think everyones gripe with sammy isnt because he doesnt score alot of goals its his performances you can see he doesnt try hard enough and is a lazy * every time a see him if a loose ball turns up he does * all . he expects the balls always goin to turn up at his feet for a celtic player i expect him to bust a gut and get the ball

 

listen its because of players like samaras is why we are * and dont look up to it in europe once again!all this sammy will do it this year and sammy needs confidnce blah blah is petty as *. why cant people see the guy is guttles and never a good enough players for us. the shirt does not shrink to fit inferior players! remember this.

 

He's on loan basically he will be back in two years. Villa also had a * spell. Same with Ibra and even Benzema is having a * time in Spain.

 

If all inferior players were to leave we wouldn't have a full squad.

Here's some *actual* stats

Celtic SPL Games period of 18 months (total): 52
Of which Samaras started: 20 (38%)
Samaras longest run of games: 4 (on one occasion)

Games Samaras Started (18 month period):
W: 16 D: 1 L: 3
Points per game: 2.45

Games Samaras did not start (18 month period):
W: 25 D: 4 L: 2
Points per game: 2.55

Clearly over this period the team sees a little improvement in final score when Samaras does not feature, but possibly not enough to satisfy a statistician. Considering he is not first choice striker, the difference is either negligible or understandable.

Let's also go back to the "18 month" timeframe that has been carefully applied by the critics. Why 18 month? Because in the months immediately before that period Samaras enjoyed a) a run of games and b) a run of goals:

Games Samaras Started (24 month period): 35
W: 26 D: 4 L: 5
Points per game: 2.34

Games without Samaras (24 month period): 41
W: 29 D: 4 L: 6
Points per game: 2.27

So it appears the fairer shift in timeframe has actually swung the favour towards Samaras playing.

Going back to the "run of games" thing. It's probably no coincidence that Samaras' richest vein of form (7 goals/8 games) coincided with his single decent run of games in a row (Oct09-Jan10)

This also takes his record to 13 goals in 35 starts, which considering the lack of consistency in games and being played for the first half of this sample as a left-winger, isn't a terrible return.

Now all these stats are not me attempting to say Samaras is a fantastic striker that should be our first choice.

I'm highlighting that he's actually a better squad player than many people are trying to manipulate via selective stats. I've also not mentioned a record of 1 goals in 4 in Europe (10/11) and 2 goals in 4 in Europe (09/10).

cannot believe people on here are defending this guy,

mystic man ,will you go through this season needing to stop the 4 with sammy at the helm?a mean as our no 1 striker?

I don't necessarily have anything against these players or think they are inferior but if Sammy is considered inferior then so must these players in my opinion.

Are these guys inferior really by our current standards? No probably not. But Sammy isn't inferior either.

 

Call it a 'weasel stat' if you want but the fact remains that since February 2010, Samaras has scored 4 league goals.

If that's good enough for you then more power to your elbow. It certainly ain't good enough for me. Samaras is bollocks and the vast majority of people on here and in the stands at Celtic Park can see it.
