Six of the best for rampant youths

    Clydesdale Bank Under-19s League
    Lennoxtown Training Centre, Glasgow
    Tuesday, February 7, 2012

    CELTIC...6
    (Atajic 30, Watt 31, Fisher 45, Jones 55, 89, 90)

    INVERNESS CALEY THISTLE...1

DEFENDER Curtis Jones was the unlikely hat-trick hero as Celtic Under-19s thumped Inverness Caley Thistle 6-1 at Lennoxtown to go second in the league.

The rampant youths had raced into a three-goal lead at the break thanks to strikes from Bahrudin Atajic, Tony Watt and Darnel Fisher.

Although the visitors reduced the deficit four minutes after the interval, Jones swiftly restored the three-goal advantage in the 55th minute with an accurate header.

And in the dying minutes, he volleyed home from the edge of the area for his second, before calmly finishing off a free-kick in the final minute to claim a rare three-goal haul.

The resounding result saw the young Hoops leapfrog Hibs into second spot in the table, having played two games less than current pacesetters, Hearts.

And only the heroics of the Inverness goalkeeper prevented the the winning margin from being even greater.

The young Celts had already threatened the opposition goal on several occasions before Atajic made the breakthrough on the half hour mark. The striker controlled Patrik Twardzik’s wonderful left-wing cross and emphatically finished into the far corner. From then on it was one-way traffic.

Just 60 seconds later, they doubled their advantage. A determined Fisher drove towards the byline and cut the ball back for Watt who duly converted.

The youths passed up further oppotunities to extend their lead, before the impressive Fisher made it three-nil on the stroke of half-time. Collecting a return pass from Atajic, he surged into the box and fired beyond the keeper.

The interval brought some respite for the visitors and they managed to pull a goal back minutes after the restart when a striker took advantage of a blocked clearance and rifled a shot into the far corner.

That sparked an instant response from the hosts. Atajic lobbed a shot onto the bar, before Jones grabbed his first, heading home from an acute angle.

There was no let-up as the fluent and purposeful approach of the the home side continued to cause havoc in the visitors´ rearguard.

Callum McGregor rattled the bar, Jones had a shot saved, while Watt, John Herron and Twardzik also came close as the Inverness goal led a charmed life.

However, in the closing minutes, Jones made the scoreline a fairer reflection on the balance of play.

Forward for a free-kick, the centre-half showed terrific technique to volley in off the post from the edge of the box.

Twardzik was then denied in quick succession by the Highlanders´ shot-stopper, before Jones was in the right place to steer home from a free-kick.

The in-form young Celts will now turn their attentions to a challenging trip to Aberdeen in the SFA Youth Cup at the weekend as they aim to to mount a successful defence of the trophy for a third successive season.

CELTIC (4-4-2) Thomson; Fisher, Jones, Fraser, Chalmers; Herron, Irvine, McGregor, P. Twardzik; Atajic (Lindsay 75), Watt (Kirwan 87)
    Not Used: Fasan, Findlay, Yaqub

6's is a totally different animal when compared to 11's so i wouldn't worry about it too much.

I wont big up these lads and put undue pressure on their shoulders.

I've seen enough "superstars" that were making the step up only for them to be compared to some past great and then fall on their *.

I agree our youth set up looks to have great potential but that's all it is, potential.

Great to see these lads doing well and here's hoping they can make the grade. History tells me the vast majority wont make it though.

I think their are quite a few in our youth set up right now who have the talent but it remains to be seen whether they will get the game time necessary for a young player to make the breakthrough.

Checking on the CelticWiki it say Gallagher partnered Thompson at CB, don't know whether this would have been Grant or Declan Gallagher who were both youngsters at the club at this time, Grant I think plays for Clyde now while Declan is at Stranraer
