For the time that he was with Celtic he was great and he was brilliant entertainment but he definitely isn't up there with the real Celtic greats.

Not a Celtic great but an entertainer whos combustible personality epitomised the team of that era.

As for the fascist thing, guys peoples political, religious values and beliefs are picked up from their environment, culture and sub cultures. The same way everyone on here has their beliefs mainly shaped from background, so did Paolo.

The subject Di Canio shows the hypocrisy among Celtic supporters very well.

supposedly we are open for anyone. no matter what belief, religion or colour. the truth is, our pseudo lefties/communists won't tolerate anything different than their own beliefs. No one is forced to accept or approve Di Canio's belief. the key word is tolerance. I'm far from being a right wing guy, but I personally know some who are and they have always been sound to me.

Only because they have other ideologies than me doesn't mean I have to dislike them. it's about the human, not his thoughts or ideologies. do you hate all huns? are they all the same? they ain't.

Sometimes Celtic supporters act as if we were a political party rather than a massive football club. at the end of the day by hating other people because of their political beliefs you become as bad as them - no matter if you are left or right, political right/left extremists are equal *.

Di Canio's problem was that he was open about his beliefs. I'm sure we have had much worse ideologies and even criminals (rapists/paedos/murderes etc) among our players who are still being adored.

ps: it IS a roman salute. it got copied so many times after they had invented it. fascism and nazism is NOT the same. some need to re-read their history books.

    Very good post. Totally agree.

The whole extreme left wing thing with fans of our club is getting too big imo. Outwith of football, we should be a club who are proud of our Irish heritage, be open to everyone and who sympathises with those who have suffered injustice or prejudice. But we are not some ultra left wing political group. I blame groups like the GB for spreading this extreme political stuff. Again they think they're more important than they are and half the people spouting the extreme left don't understand what they're talking about. (As immortal said the whole Roman and * salute is a prime example)

I'm no right winger but all this crap about hanging banners upside down cos John Reid is Chairman and was Foreign Secretary at a stage during Iraq conflict. Should be no place for it. Go join the communist or socialist party if it you want a platform to express your views

Surely its both? I'd prefer to judge him on what he did for us. His political beliefs are of no interest to me. The same way the religion of a player is of no consequence to me too. As i said below the whole extreme left wing thing is creeping too much into our support. What has it got to do with Celtic? Join the socialist or communist party if u want a platform. By the way i'd be saying the same thing regardless of which side of the politcal spectrum it was - no place for extreme political views in our club

Very true at last somone who understands and dosent just react.

Re my previous post, people pick up the beliefs from their environment. British and Americans have been brought up with fascism and naziism rolled into one convenient hateball maincourse, associated with murder and racism and have communism for pudding. Not many people care to understand them or to admit that democratic countries have racked up their fair share of carnage also.

    Top notch post.

Di Canio was a child hood hero of mines; not a Celtic great though. Regardless of his political beliefs that won't change.

    Great posts.

As a player he was excellent, really lifted the crowd and got us buzzing at a time when we didn't really have that much to get excited about. I didn't agree with his political beliefs, but they were his beliefs not mine and he's entitled to them.

    Thanks mate. :52:

I'm not a professor, just someone who has seen some football in europe and tries to understand everything associated with it.

    I adored him.

Skillful, passionate, crazy, a big-game player, a goalscorer and absolutely despised the huns. Just gutted that he never got the championship medal he deserved. :54:

    Wish he'd hung around longer.

Not even gonna comment on his politics, legend for me. :50:

Judging him on his time at Celtic and for his playing alone, I loved the guy. Would have to agree that he could never be classed as a Legend after only one season. Loved the fact he alone was worth the admission price for any game, a true entertainer. He showed the passion on the park for "Our" club, that we show in the stands. Love for that!
