I perosnally believe Jock Stein Was the greatest British manager in history . Of course Im baised - but i have went through periods of believing ferguson was as good. I came to the conclusion as when you look at steins acheivements with celtic a club from such a small nation is virtually unrecognisable in football - ofcourse steaua burcharest was a similar feat
but stein's two european finals and 10 league titles in a matter of 12 season is formidable.

Of course Ferguson's record is outstanding at aberdeen is as impressive as any never mind has acheievements at united. He split the old firm and conquered one of europes top competitions . He also dominated english football for best part of two decades. and also host of european triumphs.

What are peoples thoughts when reflecting on the two.

Big Jock was a visionary, he was using methods that no one else was using at the time and to assemble a team of local lads that conquered Europe will never be matched again.

Ferguson was/is a great manager but he can't hold a candle to Mr. Stein.

Hard to figure out seeing as Stein managed in the time before money was so important. Could Stein have went to Man Utd and won everything with £100millions to spend? definetly but he never so hard to compare.

Stein continued to do well though even when losing good players like Murdoch, Gemmell, Macari, Johnstone, Chalmers, Auld and without the money to really replace them and used the youth team and cheap guys like Glavin and Deans. Where as when Ferguson moves players on he usually has £15million+ to replace them but still does the job.

I would say Stein maybe through bias but I think Stein could coach players better, spot better players and was as consistant as theres ever been.

25 Cup finals and 10 League wins in 12 years...

I think the fact he also steered scotland to two consequtive world cups shows he was able to master it on an international stage

Stein for me based purely on everything he achieved was without big money to spend.

I think this is a crucial point which is often overlooked.

the problem is you can't compare them both directly as they are from two different eras.

Ferguson edges it for me, purely because he's clearly exhibited his longevity. I'm not contesting Stein has the skills to do what Ferguson has done, but the fact remains that he did not, and therefore we can't really say that Stein was better.

Stein no danger. Ferguson undoubtedly a brilliant manager but Stein's achievements more difficult IMO. To be the first British team to win the EC is still the standout achievement for me.

Not by a * mile. Inheriting expensively assembled squad after expensively assembled squad, using the countless disgraceful ways of cheating to win, does not make a great manager.

To answer the question, I hold the opinion that Ferguson has been more successful over a longer period of time but Stein taught Ferguson how to do it. I've never figured out who is better out of the two but that is my take on it, don't really care either, the point is that they are both right up at the top with the greatest managers in history and both Scottish.

Very tricky one. I think Ferguson has achieved more, but Stein didn't have the resources available to him. I very much doubt that Ferguson could have essentially taken 11 players off the streets of Glasgow and turned them into European Champions. Also Stein was Ferguson's mentor. He made him, so on that basis I'll say Stein.
Oh, and of course Stein was a Tim, Fergie's a hun!

Ferguson has had more money to work with in his tenure at Man United than Stein ever did at Celtic.

As Scotzbhoy said, I really couldn't see anyone other than Stein being able to make eleven Glaswegians the champions of Europe. It sounds almost absurd to say it, even to this day. It will most definitely never happen again, not in Scotland anyway.

If you take a look at the players Man United have had to buy in order to win their several European trophies and then compare their teams to the Lisbon Lions, our achievements are far greater, considering our squad was full of homegrown talent and the EPL has been totally taken over by foreigners.

    Overall, I have to say:

    Stein > Ferguson.

Hard one. Stein for what he achieved with the resources he had, in comparison to what Fergie has now, was amazing. Fergie is a fantastic manager though.

    Both great footballing men.

Its really very difficult to compare them. Fergie has always had loads of cash at his disposal, much, much, much more than Big Jock ever had. When you consider what Jock was able to accomplish with what he had at his disposal it is absolutely incredible. But at the same time its a bit too much like comparing Mars to the Moon.
