Honestly think rodes will fail at a big league. Look at Craig mackail smith scored about 35 goals in league 1 and has failed in the championship 9 goals in 45 games

i'd be afraid to spend £5m on one player. he has talent but would he ever be allowed to flourish without that burden of being a 'big signing'?

i hope we do land him but £5m seems too steep for us.

I haven't seen much of Rhodes.

We need a holding striker who Hooper can play off, and who can play alone up front in Europe when needed in away games. Can Rhodes play this role?

Pogrebnyak?! Way off our radar IMO.

yes but Im not sure about europe. Going from League 1 straight into european competetion when he would be relied on upfront alone by us would be some task.

Pavel Pogrebnyak is about to sign a 3year deal with Fulham - we would have no chance matching the wages on offer - He has already bought a house in London .

I think both Rhodes and Mackail Smith can play the holding role, but they're also very capable skill wise. They would score a barrowload up here, but europe would be a learn as you play affair.

Regarding Pogrebnyak: it's not over 'til it's over. If we clear out the dead wood, we'll free up at least £20k per week in wages. Add another £15-20k (which is pretty much standard for a new Celtic striker), and I think we'd be in with a great chance of signing him.

Oh, and as far as I'm concerned, Mackail-Smith isn't good enough for the Championship, never mind Celtic. That he's so often called up to the national team is a mark of how bad a manager Craig Levein is.

there's no way we'll give anyone £35-40k per week. no chance. it's break our wage structure.

Progrebnyak is a pipe dream. more so than Rhodes.

Look, McCourt and McGinn are probs on at least £5k each. O'Dea must be on around the same (at least). Majstorovic, as an international defender, will be on nothing short of £15k. Get rid of those 4 and we're laughing.

This 'we have no money for wages' claim is a myth. Look at the size of squad we have - it's clear that our wage budget is ample to say the least. Cut all the surplus players, and we'll have enough for at least one big earner.

Aye, I am still talking about Pogrebnyak. Get rid of 4/5 surplus players and that frees up easily £25k. Add to that the usual amount we'd pay for a striker (I think Hooper's on £12k or so) and we'd be able to afford something acceptable.
If Fulham want to offer him £60k then let them: I never said we could compete with that, and I don't like having words put into my mouth. All I'm saying is we might as well try to offer him something.

we could afford a high earner but we won't due to us having a wage structure which we won't break. i wouldn't be comfortable breaking it anyway as it comes with a massive risk - eg Gravesen.

the last bit of getting rid of the deadwood is easier said than done. Lennon has been trying for some time to get rid of deadwood since taking the hot seat with some success. hard to get rid of players who no one else wants.

Pogregnyak is a no-go from the start. we may as well be enquiring about Wayne Rooney.

Wayne Rooney comparison is a real exaggeration. I know what you mean about shifting the dead wood being difficult, but a few of them are coming to the end of their contracts, and others like O'Dea are attracting interest from down south.

The point i'm making is that it's a waste of time and resources chasing Pogrebnyak.

Is O'Dea attracting interest? He has left us as his contract has ran out and i can't see a host of clubs queueing for his signature. that highlights the difficulty Lawwell has in selling the deadwood.

As the above post says, we offer someone outwith our wage structure, soon the rest of the squad will want a raise. no chance on Pogrebnyak. we won't even throw our name into the hat. i'm not disheartened as he won't come here. he's staying in the EPL.

Daily Mail running with this one today. No quotes - just "Lennon rekindles interest, and DM understands Glasgow is Rhodes' preferred option."
