    Hey all hope this is the right area to post this.

    Im doing a Masters Degree and my dissertation is on the links between old firm fans and their political stance.

    if anyone can give me some books i can get to help me, would be a great help.

    My proposal is i believe celtic fans are more left wing and rangers are more right wing.

    There is an English lecturer at Glasgow Uni who might be able to help you. He wrote a book about Celtic and its place within Scottish society. Cannae mind his name, but I'll try and find out. Might be useful for context.

    Qualitiative interviews would be your best method for data collection, I don't think books would help you much. Get in touch with the head guys at a few CSCs and RSCs and see if they would give you an open interview and maybe even allow you to distribute semi-structured interview questions amongst their membership and just have them post them back.

    there was a thread in the history and politics section, and a political calculator/compass that asked you questions and then give you your placing on the political map. it was an interesting thread. most of the fans who did it were left leaning.

    I would say this idea is a better way of getting a more modern overview of it rather than referring to outdated books and others assumptions.:50:

    I know mate, I did one myself, but i'm just saying that books won't be a great source for information and certainly shouldn't be your primary source (although you probably know that). You'll have a hard time weeding out the stuff with inherent bias or agenda in it, pro-celtic/anti-rangers and pro-rangers/anti-celtic and all that, old firm fans being the level headed, not crazy as * type of people that they are. :icon_mrgreen:

    yea i was thinking about doing the questionnaire to both supporters club head guys, im just at the start so just wanted some things to read for my proposal.

    This is a very good idea but keep in mind these guys represent the "harder core" fans and may give a different view from those who support the club but do not belong to organisations. Not a bad thing if that is what you are after but from a research perspective it may give you a bit more outliers than average fan views.

    An easy point of comparison would be to look at areas that are considered celtic or rangers areas and look at voting trends there. So if rangers are right wing, is this reflected in support for right wing parties or not in typically rangers regions of the country?

    As regards books, Tom Devine has written quite a bit on the subject (he is a celtic fan). There is also a book called "celtic minded" by Joeseph Bradley that is a bit hit and miss but has bits and pieces touching on the politics of the club. There might be a rangers equivalent

    Let us know how you get on as I find this very interesting. What subject is your masters degree?

    im at UWS uni in paisley, and doing project management but one of the guys said someone in his previous uni done similar dissertation so thought that would be more interesting
