Not much time at all in each city, depending on how many stops you make, how long you can drive without needing to stop and spend the night somewhere in between, and what your desired route is. More factors to consider are what time of year it will be (winter is a horrible time to be driving around because the weather is bad and there are lots of car accidents, during the summer months there is lots of roadwork being done, which causes travel delays).

For example, from Chicago to Los Angeles (the historic Route 66, which I would love to drive) is approximately 2448 miles and takes about 30-something hours to drive. Keep in mind that gas/petrol averages $3.50-4.00 per gallon these days. New York City to Chicago is about 790 miles and takes about 14 hours to drive.

In three months you can see a lot of the country. Decide what cities are a must see and what you want to see in those cities so you can figure out how much time you would like to spend there and then plan your route accordingly.

I'm really wanting to do it. I've just started a new job so now would be the time but obviously need to plan things so it wouldn't be till next year. How much money would you take if you were going for 3 months and where would I hire a car from?

I've always wanted to do the same but unfortunately circumstances have never allowed me to do it. Hopefully I can get to do it in the future while im relativity young or still in my twenties. Love to go off the beaten track and see the real america and not the pre-packaged *.

Live in Georgia, depending on how old you are I would highly recommend visiting Athens. UGA is situated there and its known as the party uni of america. Been there a couple of times and when your Scottish or Irish your guaranteed to get laid! Atlanta is nice too but try stay away from the outskirts and suburbs, really dodgy

    That's only if you're driving slow :icon_mrgreen:

Generally speaking, it's safe to drive 10 mph over the speed limit almost anywhere in the U.S. without getting pulled over for speeding, if you go slightly over that threshold, anything can happen. Beware, speed limits tend to change often and in areas where you wouldn't logically think they need to change. That's my tidbit on driving.

As for where to visit, I'd personally love to visit Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, and the wine country out in California for a few weeks myself. I've been out west a bit and I'd definitely recommend driving through Montana if you get the chance and maybe visiting Yellowstone and definitely heading over to the Grand Canyon and the Rockies. Denver is a pretty cool city. I've enjoyed myself in New Orleans (great music, culture, and food there), New York City, Boston, Philadelphia, Charleston (South Carolina), and anywhere along the Blue ridge parkway in the Carolinas or Tennessee. I've also got a lot of family up in Vermont and New England and I'd recommend driving all through Vermont which is amazingly beautiful and definitely check out Maine if you can (the whole eastern coast Portland up to Bar Harbor is really scenic and cool).

Me too mate. I love the idea of just being able to * off and see the States and living the good life for a few months. I imagine it'd be like something you see in movies, that's why it's so appealing.

It's on my bucket list :icon_mrgreen:
