With all the talk about us needing to spend big money on proven quality I was sitting here thinking, with a few notable exceptions (Lennon, Sutton & Paulo Di Canio) have our big name signings ever really worked for us?

Gravesen, Juninho, even Robbie Keane and Craig Bellamy to a certain extent just didn't really work out for us. Ian Wright was another one, any time in recent memory that a big name has signed for us (Juarez being another! Mexican international off the back of a good world cup, being scouted by Barcelona etc) I just can't think of it having a happy ending.

Any reason why this is? Can anybody think of a player who had a big name (aye aye I know JVoH very funny) who was actually succesful for us?

The players who arrived with a massive name and massive fanfare, I wouldn't really say Lambert is in that category although he should've been. I can remember that being met with a great deal of sceptism cos quite frankly he was pretty gash at Motherwell.

Viduka is another one that didn't really work out, good player one great season but we all know the problems he brought. The * about to be able to play him when he was saying he was homesick etc when we just bought him as well.

I agree, was thinking that when I read the OP.

The biggest dissapointment for me was robbie keane.

Viduka did work out though he scored something like 30 goals in 35 games and was sold for a £2million profit, not to mention being an utterly class player. If the huns sold Jelavic next week for £6million would you then say he never worked out and he is about half the player of Viduka?

We've had no more or no less successes/failures than anyone else.

That's why I said to a certain extant but we didn't win the league and we didn't manage to keep a hold of him so while not a failure it didn't quite work out for us.

I just always get the feeling the ones with all the fanfair always seems to fall short.

I thought both Bellamy and Keane were a success in terms of their contribution to the team, neither were here for the long term.

How was he disappointment though he scored 16 goals in 19 games and won the Celtic Player of the Year :39: did you expect 20 goals in 19 games?

I think everyone would have been over the moon if they knew Keane was going to get 16 goals in 3 and a half months at the Club.

Celtic are a club who make stars. We don't buy stars and thats the way it always should be.

    Cos you're a cow :56:

If he walked out on them at a crucial stage of the season, argued with the manager and generally * up team harmony I would grade him as a grade A * and better off out of the club. That's the way I view Viduka and that's why I don't think I class him as a success, despite the fact he was an incredible player.

Massimo Donati is another one, an AC Milan player who once cost £10m. Arrived with massive fanfair, the Italian Gerrard :97: Failure as wel.

Viduka was still a great player who we made money on though.

Theres been loads eiither way successes and failures who were met with great fanfare the same as every other club.

Kaka, Emerson, Diarra etc Real Madrid
Veron, Anderson, Carrick, Forlan, Barthez etc Man U
Crespo, Shevchenko, Zhirkov, Torres etc Chelsea
    Ibrahimovic, Keirrison, Caceres etc Barcelona
J.Cole, Babel, Keane, Aquilani etc Liverpool

Flo, Mendes, Edu, Van Vossen, Salenko, Rozenthal, Amato, Guivarch, Prodan, Kanchelskis, Mikhailichenko, Ball, Arteta etc

    Every Club is the same.

I know what you mean with the other clubs but I think it always just seems with us, our big fanfare signings are always more miss than hit. Whereas those clubs you mentioned always seem to have more hits than misses.

    Harald Bratbaak's another one.
