Both Celtic and Rangers will be seeded in the draw for the Europa League play-off round on Friday.

Celtic qualified for the final qualifying round on account of winning the 2010/11 Scottish Cup. Rangers have dropped into the competition as a result of their Champions League qualifying defeat to Malmo FF.

A club's UEFA coefficient for 2011/12 is calculated based on a percentage of their performance over the five previous seasons, as well as drawing on a percentage of the combined coefficent of all Scottish clubs over the same time period. Either way, defeat for Rangers does not affect their standing for this campaign.

Suggestions that Rangers would inherit Celtic's seeding in the Europa League, and make Neil Lennon’s team non-seeds, are wide of the mark.

While Ally McCoist's side are comfortably the 11th seed out of 38, their Glasgow rivals only suffered a minor fall to 16th seed as a result of Rangers' entry into the competition.

Rangers have a coefficient of 56.028, with Celtic's standing at 39.528. The top seeds in the Europa League draw will be Sevilla, at 93.465.

The current cut-off between seeds and non-seeds lies between Rapid Bucharest, who have a coefficient of 16.164, and Partizan Belgrade, who stand at 15.850. Seedings are subject to change depending on results on Thursday night, but no scores can have a negative effect on Celtic or Rangers.

Nations are permitted to have more than one seed. England potentially could have four seeds - Tottenham Hotspur, Fulham, Birmingham City and Stoke City - with a number of other countries having two or more seeded clubs.

If Hearts progress with victory over Paks SE, they will not be seeded for Friday's draw, nor will their Hungarian opponents if they are victorious at Tynecastle.

Country protection is in force for the qualifying rounds, group stage and first of five knockout rounds. As such, two Scottish teams can not be drawn to face each other until at least the round of 16.

Although the full list of seeds and non-seeds is currently subject to change, both Celtic and Rangers are guaranteed to avoid the likes of Sevilla, Roma, Tottenham Hotspur, PSV, Paris Saint-Germain and Dinamo Kiev.

The draw for the Europa League play-off round will be held in Nyon on Friday, August 5 at 12.30pm UK time.
