Sunderland have completed the signing of midfielder James McClean from League of Ireland outfit Derry City.
The 22 year-old left winger moves from his hometown club for a guaranteed fee of £350,000 and has agreed a deal which will keep him at the Stadium of Light until summer 2014.

We had the chance to sign this lad. He would have swam from Derry to play for us. Has been outstanding for Sunderland under the blessed one. Some bhoys on here stating he wouldn't be good enough for us. He's one that got away.

Hammy - because a lot of bhoys on here saying he wasn't good enough for us. Spurs now looking to sign him whenn Bale leaves in the summer. Worth millions now. The lad and was hoping we would make the offer to Derry City. Never happened for some strange reason. Just highlighting we had a gem but let it go. Also, people need to realise that the League of Ireland can produce high quality players

Refer back to my post on the first page !

This lad made the step up from derry city LoI to epl in a matter of weeks.
Gunt followed up with a good post after that. There are players over in this league that will make the grade in weeks given the chance and you know the player.

Also this lad comes from a huge celtic crazy family !

Another one off the Derry City production line, McCourt, McGinn, Sammon, Lafferty, McClean... Keep an eye out for Patrick McEleney.

very limited player imo, just goes to show the hype machine that is the epl. He's had a couple of good games and now he's worth millions. Forrest is twice the player he is.

Haven't seen him much but from what I've seen against Norwich and Peterborough on the tv he looked like a player. Built like a tank, runs all day, gets stuck in, can head a ball, got a sweet left foot and never hides. By the sounds of things he's given Sunderland something added extra as well as MON. I'll come back to this sometime to see who's half the player of who. Apparently Trap has told him he is to be called up for the next squad too.

he's a very good athlete, there's no doubt about that. I just don't think he's great technically and from what I've seen from him he's all left foot. When I compare him to Forrest for example I just think Forrest is better in nearly every way so I don't really get why everyone raves about McClean. He's a decent player but not the world beater everyone is making out imo.

Fair enough mate, he's a good young Irish player and obviously looks like he would have been a good buy for us after all, but you can never know beforehand - look at Torres. 50Million world class striker, now he couldn't hit a certain animal's * with a fecking piano never mind banjo.

Just look at McLean as the one that got away, I see no reason to bash our transfer policy. If we keep letting one good boy go, but signing Wanyama, Izzy, Kayal, Hooper, Stokes, Forster, Matthews, Ledley.... every year, then i'm a very happy man!

Nobody ever said Mc Clean was amazing but he's done really well for himself so far and he's got the right manager in Martin O' Neill to help his development. Hope he keeps it up.

Yeah, another good young player, no doubt about it.:icon_mrgreen:

I wonder why people don't say such and such is all right foot? lol

Couldn't say he'll be a world beater after 9 or 10 games, but I'd say MON will try make him one and feel like one. He's certainly a MON type player. Just reading Sunderlands forum and they seem to rate him higher than they did Henderson (who I have yet to watch), which after such a short time shows the impact he has made.

it doesn't matter which foot it is I'm just saying he is very one footed, unless he's got arjen robben type talent (he doesn't imo) he will never be a top player.

tbh it wouldn't be hard to be better than Henderson, I've never rated him at all.

You must be kidding. The kid has 11 appearances for Sunderland (2 of those are late-game subs, I believe) and has collected 3 goals and 3 assists in the process.

he's on a good run of form but imo he doesn't have what it takes to make it at the very top, athletiscism isn't enough. As I've said before he's to one footed for me. People are making out like we missed out on a great talent but imo in a few years time the likes of McGeouch and George will be much better than McClean because they have the technical ability required at the highest levels. Obviously he could go on to prove me wrong and be a great player but I just don't see it.

I agree, lets see if he's having this kind of impact in 18months or 2 years. Then we are talking a top player and a missed opportunity for Celtic. As an Irish man I hope he does kick on as that will be great for us. If I put with Celtic hat on, I think Forrest is a better more skillful player and I really rate McGeouch too. Plus we have Broonie and Commons as well, who are top players. It isn't a position we need worry too much about. That said pleased for the lad. Great to see decent young Irish lads building on what Trap has already.
